  • Shooting at location of Chinese Lunar New Year festival
  • Nine killed, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department says
  • Unclear if suspect is in custody
  • Social media footage shows emergency workers treating victims
Jan 22 (Reuters) - Nine people were killed in a mass shooting in the city of Monterey Park, California, late on Saturday, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

"Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide detectives are responding to assist Monterey Park Police Department with a shooting death investigation. There are nine deceased," the department said in a brief statement.

"There is no additional information available at this time."

The department said the suspect was male, but it was not clear if he was still at large.

The shooting took place after 10 p.m. (0600 GMT on Sunday) around the location of a Chinese Lunar New Year celebration held in Monterey Park, U.S. media reported.

Footage posted on social media showed injured people on stretchers being taken to ambulances by emergency staff. Around the scene of the shooting - reported to have been at a dance club - police guarded cordoned-off streets, the video showed.

"Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones tonight in our neighboring city, Monterey Park, where a mass shooting just occurred," Los Angeles City Controller Kenneth Mejia said in a tweet.

Tens of thousands of people had attended the festival earlier in the day.

The Los Angeles Times quoted the owner of a nearby restaurant as saying that people who sought shelter in his property told him there was a man with a machine gun in the area.

Seung Won Choi told the newspaper that he believed the shooting took place at a dance club.

Monterey Park is a city in Los Angeles county, around 7 miles (11 km) from downtown Los Angeles.

Yo, they really need to tighten up on these guns right now in every state. Remember in another three and I said this type of shit can destroy our country from within well I was right.
Ideal but they won’t man. Gun advocates & lobbyists will use their same asinine arguments about how “it’s not the gun but the person..” or “criminals don’t follow gun laws..” blah blah blah, completely missing the overall point.

Simply making harder to acquire automatic rifles would help immensely, but the incessant need to hunt down a Water Buffalo at any given moment is too much for them to let go.

It happened inside Star Dance Studio. We had friends inside. Mostly Chinese, over 60y.o. were celebrating Lunar New Year with a dance social party. We were texting with the students and teachers of Star Dance Studio as soon as we found out (an hour later). The owner is confirmed dead. One student survived and is already home. So many didn't return our texts yet.

It actually is already. You can not walk into a gun store and legally walk out with an automatic rifle, suppressor, SBR, SBS... etc. Those items are NFA items that require a tax stamp and typically takes at least 6 months before you get an approval to pick it up. Once you have a tax stamp, you're officially in the ATF registry and they can show up to your front door at any time to check your paperwork.

California itself adds to restrictions with magazine restrictions, approved firearms lists, and requiring specific configurations on rifles such as not allowing pistol grips.

Don't let media or politicians fool you. There are things in place to regulate things and the process isn't as easy to get them as they may be made to seem. That being said, there's a lot that needs to be cleaned up to make those regulations more consistent and effective.

There's nothing that they can do about it.

At a news conference Sunday morning, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna gave a “preliminary description” of the suspect: an Asian male between the ages of 30 and 50. He did not disclose information on a potential motive, saying, “anything’s a possibility.”

“We are utilizing every resource to apprehend this suspect in what we believe to be one of the county’s most heinous cases,” Luna said.

He added that law enforcement does not currently believe an assault rifle was used in the massacre, which left five men and five women dead.

Roughly 17 minutes after the shooting at the Star Dance Studio, an Asian man walked into a second dance studio in nearby Alhambra with a firearm, but individuals there were able to wrestle the gun away from him, Luna said.

“That individual took off,” the sheriff explained, adding that witnesses spotted a white cargo van in the area.

Luna noted that the second incident “may be related” to the Monterey Park shooting, but law enforcement is still investigating. On Sunday morning, officers were seen going in and out of Alhambra’s Lai Lai Ballroom, which noted on its Facebook page that it was suspending all night dances and would reopen for lessons only on Monday.

“As an extra precaution, All students and teachers are subject to search prior to entering the studio,” the studio wrote.

Earlier on Sunday, law enforcement ensured the community that it would be devoting all its resources to the investigation.
