That was a very sad article. Dude had the classic delusion that the drugs were making him a better artist.
Granted, in the short term drugs can eliminate distractions and allow you to focus on your craft, but long-term the main distraction becomes that monkey on your back and when you don't take them. Inspiration becomes rationale for crippling addiction.
Seen a lot of guys go out this way. Had one friend that kept using meth because it claimed it connected him to his past lives and prophetic visions. Another incredibly talented makeup artist who claimed that cocaine was necessary to schmooze with her industry connections. Another was a dancehall reggae artist who claimed being blind drunk made him a better performer.
Makes me think of Samuel L Jackson who didn't reach the peak of his career until after putting down the pipe.
