one thing i find strange is the fact that we're the only group of people in America that talk about that "dont neglect the hood/race" BS. If I may piggy back on this theme. Jim Brown is 100% correct. Before the multi-million dollar contracts and endorsements it was people like him who had to pave the way. They held a second job in the off season and they stood up for the collective when it meant losing their jobs and worse - their lives.
For almost 40 years we have been devoid of a socially conscious athlete/activist. People are too scared to loose what they did not suffer to create.
I know the hammer is going to be dropped on me because of this, but you know who is the most disappointing of all...Jordan. There is no other marketing force/symbol of physical excellence and tenacity out there. Once dude left the limelight all he has been good for is stories about how much loot his wife is going to get, if some white girl is on his arm or how his kids are f-n up.....He had/has power but is only seen as a tool to market undershirts. For the generation of "me" yeah he got paid and he got rings, but he had/has more.

Did you ever see footage of him giving speeches on race relations? DAMN son...The way he verbally undressed dumbass reporters who tried to test his intelligence. I wish he did not have his brains beat in. He would have made an excellent politician or activist. Dude was more than a boxer. Going to jail over the war, facing death threats, being hounded by the government and he did not care.
We let these athletes sell us clothes, cologne, and shoes but no one asks them to sell us on being more than sheep and consumers. Jim Brown, Ali, Jesse Owens will always be remembered for their competitive excellence, but revered for their contribution to society as a whole. This will not be said for this generation of athletes.
