Donald Faison is a talented dude who is funny as fuck on Scrubs. Mos Def is a talented dude who is a fire rapper and has a unique onscreen presence. Mike Epps is an all around funny mofo that can add life to an otherwise dull movie. Wood Harris has been killin' it on screen for years and Darius McCrary...well...there was always Family Matters, Eddie. Still, with the talent line up in this movie, you would think you'd be able to squeeze out a decent comedy about a mis-delivered box of drugs, a couple of high ass delivery dudes, some pissed off dealers and some happy ass two-time loser crooks. You would think, right? Well, Benny Boom almost did with his directorial debut. The problem is that this movie couldn't decide what kind of comedy it was going to be, if it was going to be a comedy at all.

Let me lay it out a little bit:
Donald Faison (Leo) is a fuck up. He's a delivery driver who gets high 24/7 and is only holding onto his job because his mom (Debbie Allen) is the supervisor. Wood Harris (Guch) and Mike Epps (Brody) are homies that are "crime buddies" who constantly fuck up heists, the latest one being a bank robbery where they end up jacking the security tapes instead of the money. Cisco Reyes (Jesus - that's HAY-zeus, but not if you let him tell it) is waiting for a big shipment of coke from his boss while being constantly reprimanded by his pestering girlfriend Yasmin Deliz (Chita). [Mos Def]Damn, that bitch was bad![/Mos Def]

Leo fucks up and delivers the box to Jesus's neighbors, Brody and Guch. See where this is going? The shit should have been funny as fuck. They made a few crucial mistakes. Mos Def is highly underused. He's only in a couple of scenes - one of which is in the trailer. Secondly, the movie goes from being a comedy to being a black comedy (not a black cast comedy, fools! A black comedy like War Of The Roses or Pulp Fiction) to being a drama with a message? I'm not even sure. That's the problem. Benny, you need to go back to directing videos, nigga - if you can't get your shit together. One of the most important parts of directing is DIRECTION and this movie had too many. Instead of being "typical" they tried to flip shit up. I wish they'd have chosen to be typical. The reason there are formulas for certain types of movies is because they work. If this were an indie film, they could have played with it a bit more and it could have been tight. Instead, they were vague about what kind of movie you were seeing and the characters were not likable enough for you to feel compassion for any of them. There have been many movies to fall into this trap before. I remember not caring if any of the characters from Cloverfield survived because none of them were all that relatable. This movie, while having funny characters, also had characters that were too flawed to see as the protagonist and you end up defaulting to characters that are "less fucked up" than others.
I went in wanting to like this movie. I admit that. The ending made me have to cast a dark cloud on this film.
If you go see this joint, go see it because you want to support Benny in hopes he gets it right next time. Go see it because you know all of the white folk and Trek fans are going to be at Star Trek. Go to see fine ass Yasmin Deliz, who actually proved to have much more potential as an actress after this film. Go for the theater experience. Go for the popcorn and artificial butter. Just don't go thinking Mo suggested it. I would really wait till this movie is on video to see it.

i could tell this was going to be a fucked up review when i scrolled over the thread title and saw where you were recounting past glory days of the cast

:smh: I knew it. The trailer looked like the best thing about it.

Thanks for the review Mo, it's been a while.

Damn. I was rooting for Benny Boom. Jessy Terrero didn't have a good time coming out the gate with that Soul Plane shit. Mos Def usually picks good flicks though. I was shocked to see him headline this shit. Wood Harris can be a bit iffy. He picks good TV roles but for movies I think he just picks whatever comes his way.

Honestly, once I knew Mike Epps was in it, I knew it would suck. When I seen Mos in the trailer I was thinking a Be Kind, Rewind like movie in which I liked. But when Mike Epps shows up a few seconds later in the trailer .... yeah I'll wait on the dvd.

To be honest, the fuck ups of this movie are the fault of Benny and the writers. The actors did what they could with the flick and it had the potential to be pretty good.
I could see how on paper this would have looked like a potentially good film. The end will make you want to throw your drink at the screen.

Bitch had no lines and rubbed on an kissed an Asian bitch, which was shown in quick flashes - not even straight shots. Shit took all of about five seconds. Like I said, not even worth mentioning.

The trailer was annoying except for the hot chics they flashed to now i know its crap, thanks for saving me some time MO

Where would you rank this compared to First Sunday? Seems like a similiar flick. I seen the trailer for this and it looked interesting due to Wood Harris and Mos DEF IMO. Not even on some comedy shit I just thought damn these dudes got a solid resume i'll check it out. Mike Epps.....I don't know what to think of him. I'm a fan but i've seen more bullshit than quality from dude to the point where I shouldn't even be a fan. Donald Faison's pretty funny in the shit i've seen him in. First seen the trailer and saw Benny Boom was directing. Been wondering what he's been up to because you don't see him doing many videos last year. But damn. I think i'm gonna give it a chance. Not sure if its by rent or by theater though or straight up download though. Not really that amped to see the shit in camera quality.

It's "worth mentioning" (on a porn board) that her screen-time is limited.

They obviously liked her look (and 5 seconds) enough to put her in the trailer.

Awwwww. I really was looking foward to seeing it cause I fucking love Scrubs. Turk is the shit! Since the show is about to end I was hoping this movie would help him branch out onto the big screen again.

Now it doesn't even sound funny. Kinda hesitant to support it.

The only reason the bitch is in the trailer is because her five seconds of titilation is about the only sexual activity in the whole movie and they need to sell tickets. Its a black comedy, not a porno flick.

Dtown - I didn't see First Sunday...deliberately. It looked like some bullshit to me so I didn't bother.

i was hesitant to see this movie after this review. saw it last night and thought it was great. the funniest movie i have seen in a while. a long while, white blockbusters included. the funniest ever? nah. but a while? yes. just my two cents. definetly buying dvd.

Co-sign. That's $10 I could use to see Star Trek again.

I Liked The Movie. How Eddie Winslow Got Casted In It, I'll Never Know. God He Sucks. I Also Thought They Didn't Do Enough Background On The Character Of The Guy Who Played Mike Epps' Cousin.

The movie was directed by my old Tuskegee roommate Benny "Boomp" Richburg. We had a falling out and he followed Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince to Hollywood. I was glad to see that he had directed a movie, I was also glad to see a bad reviewlol:yes:

I liked the movie but the two people that should have had drop dead funny lines - Mike Epps and Mos Def didn't have any - they had "crazy homie from around the way" type laughs - like the people in the audience... if you see it in the theater it's better if you have a good responsive audience like the theater I was at.

A few changes might have made this a better movie. Mike Epps as the delivery guy and Faison as the stick up kid. The scared dude from Paper Soldiers/State Property, Chris Eric Williams as the dude on the couch?

The scenes with the hispanic drug dealers should have been punched up more - I didn't get the running joke until the 4th time they used it because the dude couldn't deliver the joke properly - if you would've let Kevin Hart play a black/hispanic drug dealer named 'Jesus' that shit would've been off the chain. Eva Mendes instead of the bad chica and I hate to say it... Carlos Mencia injected somewhere in the cast would've moved the plot along.

Overall good movie and was slightly unpredictable toward the end which I liked - I hate knowing what's going to happen before I see it on the screen. But the end was kinda flat. Still liked it but it was just 'okay'.

Good to see you're still maintaining your blog. You should look into promoting and profiting from it.

On another note, TaylrMayd is jacking your reviews and posting it on his website? Are you cool with that?

I thought it was pretty funny but I agree with Mo. It could have been alot better. Mos def should have had more screen time and the movie seemed like it wanted to turn serious for a moment then it didnt but it didnt go back to completely comedy either. Overall I liked it tho.

And Kevin Hart would have been perfect somewhere in the movie cuz that nigga is a straight fool
