Sorry to do this, but my cousin from Chicago came down to visit for the weekend. He is 20 years old and trying to get signed. Seeing how I produce I figured this would be a good chance for us to connect. I don't really know him all that well so...

Long story short he came down and I took him around. While we were riding he popped in his cd and it was on some Soulja Boy shit!!! I'm like "Cuz. You are from Chicago?" He's like what the fuck is that supposed to mean? I wasn't expecting Twista, but I was expecting at least some Bump J hip-hop shit.

Then we went home and he tells me that all of his crew have myspace pages...more of the same Soulja Boy shit!!!

From Chicago??? I'm only 27 years old. Am I too old for this new wave of hip-hop? Should I just start giving this shit a chance main? Am I that old nigga in the park who was always talking shit about how music was real in the 70's and that this new rap shit was bull?

Are you? Colin approved I know.

tell ya cus, to change his game and go get a back up plan, A education or some kind of skill. All these ring tone rappers are killing the game. I know for a fact that most freshly signed snap hop artist are not making any money. Artist used to live off show money, now artist are getting paid up front and once that money is gone, its gone. The Record companies have it in the contracts that they get a majority of show money, ring tone sales, and any other monies made off of their products.

Now Andy..since u produce....I want u to check out my home boy....he is r&b and tell me what you think... www.myspace.com/juciesoul

Oh I feel that 100%. And believe it or not when I was kicking that to him he was open on it. I thought I would help him on the production tip, but even if I don't I will still connect with him just by keeping him on track. He was a little apprehensive about the whole not taking upfront money and grinding to make it, but I think I got through to him.

But on the real, are we those old dudes main? Is this shit better than what I think it is? I refuse to listen to that Soulja Boy album. :smh: I downloaded it and I just can't do it!

I'll check ya cuz and let you know on that.

Yeah...U heard of the 3rdfloor, they had that song "hiesman on dat hoe" Well they went to albany state...made that song , made the dance...made the youtube video....and the rest is and was history. When the record company sees u pushing units of 100k or better on your own, they play u like a fool. They see the larger picture in your ass and all u see is the money, and when u see money, u dont see numbers. You know 250,000 sounds like alot of money, but when u give up them taxes, pay accounts , layers, and other stuff like that, then split that shit four or more ways with ya group, u are left with less the 50k for yourself...Now you done went out and bought 150k worth of bull shit...and your instantly in 100k worth of debt.

Go independent and grind...If u pushing 100k units on your own....and u selling them at 10.00 a cd...u done made some serious cash flow on your own...why give that up for pennies the record company throwing you....

Prime example...Brian McKnight, he sold over 250million worth in cds....he only saw 10 percent of that....25 mill...I mean yeah thats alot, but why let a record company get 90% when u as the artist did most of your own shit...Brian , wrote, arranged, and produced most of his own albums....Now he does his own cds and sells them at his shows...which his teams books for him.

I caught trl the other day and they don't even say #1 single or album no more!! They say #1 ringtone or video download:smh::smh::smh:

I feel you. He's saying it's filled with mad country muhfucka's:lol::lol::lol:

Come on though cuz. :smh:

Hyphy is just as bad. It's young shit and not just limited to the south. :smh:

What I am saying is I was raised on Big Daddy Kane, Chuck D, Rakim, Biggie, Nas, Jay, etc... so that is what I consider greatness.

But these kids were raised on that flossy level shit that Biggie, Nas and Jay did just to sell records, but when you sell that many records sometimes that is all people remember. Especially kids. So this is some young shit going on right now.

Sidenote: I tend to disagree with people blaming it on age, I blame society as a whole. Outkast was 17!! on their debut release and they got pretty deep on a couple of songs.

Real talk. Exactly how I was explaining it to my cuz. He was telling me about how he wasn't going to just blow his advance. He was just going to invest it in a studio like his homeboy in Chicago. So I couldn't knock him for wanting to start a business, but I had to let him know...why not just grind for a year or so and buy the studio yourself without owing anybody anything? Like I said he was really stunned to hear some of what I had to say, but he was thankful too.

By the way. That myspace page is canceled. :smh:

Tru....very true...We praise stupid shit....When rap was at its best, it challenged up and coming cats to step their game up. Now its simple..fruity loops + catchy hook = millions for the white people and a few dollars for the coon ass artist....

Soulja boy made a album full of old ass songs that he put out over the last two years, before he got signed...He has no skill what so ever, thats why u dont see him popping up on anybodys remixes or shit like that. He wont be here next year...HOW I know...because look at last years sensations...

D4L
Dem Franchise Boys
Mike Jones
Paul Wall
and a bunch of others.........
they are gone and forgotten

Yeah, but understand me. They were raised on Run DMC, Rakim, Big Daddy, etc...same as me.

They came from an era where you had to be the best to get a record deal. When you had to cut them skills for years and grind relentlessly to even have a chance. Where your songs had to mean something. And they were raised on people who talked about that and showed it all the time. Legends.

Now these kids were raised on legends, but all they know is the "lifestyle" shit that they did when they got to the top. Biggie, Nas, Jay, Diddy, etc...

I asked my cousin about Biggie and he was like Big Poppa and Hypnotize. I said Gimmie The Loot and he was like "Gimmie what?"

try that.....but on the real..I know how crazy this game is...I see it all the time, niggas thinking they really gonna blow up and become the next biggest thing. They have no after thoughts...of what they wanna do or how they gonna do it..If our youth put as much time in they books then they did they lyrics...man, who knows where we would be.

Rap is cool, but if u cant single yourself out, then your just another copy of a copy that they already have. Its Funny, I look at a nigga like Eric Roberson, dude is talented as fuck....if he wanted to he could be on any label out there, but he chooses to be indy, because he can control his own path toward fame. All of his shows are sold out...I mean dude is making dough, and why share that with some modern day pimps...Thats all a record company is...A pimp...

I didn't e'en know that. The "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik" was & still is my shit!!!

well do me a favor..check my home boy out also...

and let me know what you think...and where did u DJ at...

I am not the right one to ask about this. I am old school. I listened to the first cut and it wasn't as bad as i thought but it is just not my thing. I have a decade on you and even still I was always into shit older people were into. I am just lost with whatever this sound is now on all fronts. As for DJing a whole lot of spots all over the world. I started in 1982 though and have been semi/mostly retired for at least 5 years now. I pop out very rarely for a special occasion private party kind of thing and thats it. Yeah the generation gap hit a while ago. Sorry. I am that old bitch who listens to the real music from the 70s. Name any current hit song and I guarantee you I haven't even heard it.

I'm 32, I gave up on "most" hip hop at 22... I got into other stuff Drum & Bass, Electronica, rare groove, jazz, soul etc... It is possible to "grow out" of it ya know... :dunno:

I currently fuck with Broken Beat, House and Nu Jazz!!!

What type of music did you produce?

Hiphop/reggae/dub/acid jazz/drum and bass/trip hop and very international as far as instruments/rhythms/percussion from all different countries. I was doing most of my production in the 90s. STILL fuck with my SP1200 and my ASR10 and my Technics 1200s. I go in phases. I all into my art now. When the mood strikes me I will make some more tracks. Thats the beauty of it it's always there for you.

I like ya boy's style.

I don't really do R&B though on his level. I am a hip-hop, chopped sample, rare loop type of cat. If he wanted to get into something like that I might could throw him a track or two.

In fact...I'm in the studio right now with a cat that produced for Bobby Valentino (name is Rondeau Williams) and I'll send him your boy's way and see what he think.

I just noticed he's from Albany. I'm from Tifton, but I live in the A now. Next time I get down that way I'll check with you and maybe catch one of his shows or something. Is he getting play on 96.3 down there or are they still on that same bullshit.

I think Big Rube was behind a lot of that, but your point is valid.:yes::yes:

Damn girl. You a throw back ain't you!

I like that ASR 10, but my first keyboard was the EPS which is the "old as fuck" version of the ASR-10! It takes about 15 minutes to get that shit to come on and it just may crash because you hit a particular note or something, but I still use it.

I never could get the hang of the SP1200 though. :smh:

It's just evolution.

I was born in the 80's. Hip Hop went through a lot of different changes since then.

will go through a lot more.

As far as myspace I think that's crucial. It's like being able to see everyones phone book. Made a lot of good contacts through that. I rap also and produce also amongst other things. At the end of the day it'll always be fads. Were some in every era.

And all I can say is WOWWWWWW. I hope you get him on the right path.

Yeah I know...I'm working on him!

He asked me how I would describe my production style in the car on the way back to my house and I told him if I had to compare to a newer cat it would be Kanye West. He got that, but then I said it's more like a cross between DJ Premier or Buckwild but with that Organized Noize heavy bottom to it and he looked like I just told him to solve a algebraic equation!

I knew I had to school him after that!

Now that's something different. I am starting to venture out there on the music tip a little, but I can't shake that hip-hop bug. I get into a little of that Drum & Bass and Electronica.

Of course the hip-hop lead me into the soul and jazz. Well I guess I should say soul and jazz lead me into hip-hop. You wouldn't believe my father's reaction the first time I heard Peter Piper as a kid and said they were stealing Bob James music!!! He had to go put on the record and I showed it to him!

in 1989 EPMD said "rap is out of control" and it stayed that way. Now its dead, good bye creativity. so long to the music i once loved, now i hate it...

I remember the EPS I used to fuck with that too  I learned on the SP1200 so its always my baby. Nothing and I mean NOTHING gives that particular hit for classic hiphop drums. Plus sampling on it from vinyl and that gritty sound that I MUST HAVE! I still do all my hiphop drums on that and always will. Hey I fuck with reason too but there is something about the whole classic process that is soothing to me. As for style, they said I made Timbaland beats before he did :hmm: I have never in my life used a 2 bar loop. Alot of chopping is involved. Like I sample a kick then a different snare and play my drums out. sometimes I take wierd little bits and paste them together. I don't sample basslines. I sample one single lone bass note of the sound I want and then fix it proper and make a damn instument and play my bassline. Who do I want today? Jaco Pastorius? Larry Graham? So I do it like that.
