Pop and Hip Hop are not mutually exclusive. There are plenty of rappers who fit into both categories.
Also, not all dance music is pop.

Not true. I could give you a list of at least 50 pop songs that nobody gives two shits about outside of SoundCloud or Bandcamp and that's just the stuff that came out last week.
Pop music is a genre where the artists intentionally copy the hallmarks of other genres and combine them in a way that's meant to attract as many listeners as possible.
That's why so many rappers get shit on for going pop. It has nothing to do with how many units they sold. It's about the audience they were trying to reach with their music.

Dance music is a generic term for music that's made for a dance floor. That's it! It can be from any genre including hip hop.
Generally speaking, singers, songwriters, and rappers who make music for a dance floor don't focus on complex lyrics with a lot of substance. It's about catchy sing-along hooks that sound good in the moment.
That's why it's not fair to compare someone like Nicki Minaj with MC lyte. Same as you wouldn't compare Luther Campbell to Rakim. Both do just fine in their own lane.
