The original Face/Off is a John Woo movie starring Nicolas Cage as a super-criminal who surgically swaps faces and then lives with John Travolta’s worn-down law-enforcement officer, forcing the pair into a spiral of vengeance and gunfire in one of the silliest-sounding action movies ever to become a huge hit. Well! Paramount is tired of letting this property sit on the shelf, so it’s decided to make a reboot.

Oren Uziel will write the script, and his most recent project is the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie, which means anything is liable to happen here. According to Deadline’s report, Paramount will be bringing on a new cast, but it didn’t specify if that means new characters or just new actors to play the old ones. It’s hard to imagine a Face/Off without Castor Troy and almost impossible to conjure one without Nic Cage as Castor Troy going full Cage crazy in the film’s craziest moments.

Cool idea if it's not a straight reboot but more of a sequel with the technology from the first film being used again and improved on...

With the new Special effects and the de-aging technology that could add something to the film...

And Castor Troy son is still alive being raised by Archer... There is something there to play with...

Paramount's Face/Off Writer Clarifies Project is a Sequel
It has been clarified that the new Face/Off project from writers Simon Barrett and Adam Wingard is not a remake or reboot, but rather a sequel.

Screenwriter Simon Barrett revealed that the new Face/Off project from him and writer/director Adam Wingard is not, in fact, a remake or a reboot but rather a sequel to the original 1997 John Woo action movie.

"Adam clarifying things a bit on Instagram... Face/Off is a miraculous film, we would never attempt to directly recreate its magic, but we are very excited about what we have planned," Barrett said on Twitter alongside a photo of an Instagram post from Wingard. The caption on Wingard's Instagram post read, "I would never re-imagine or remake Face/Off. It's a perfect action movie. Simon Barret and I are writing a direct SEQUEL!"

It was recently announced that Wingard, director of Godzilla vs. Kong, will take the helm of this new Face/Off production. Previously, Oren Uziel was attached to write the project, but now it is reported that Wingard will co-write the script with his frequent collaborator Simon Barrett. The reimagining will be produced by Neal Moritz and David Permut. No casting for the film has been announced.

The original Face/Off starred John Travolta as FBI Special Agent Sean Archer and Nicolas Cage as terrorist leader Castor Troy. The plot revolved around Archer undergoing a face transplant surgery to take on Troy's identity to discover the location of a bomb. However, things go awry when Troy awakens and uses the same transplant to take on Archer's identity. The over-the-top action flick was a critical and box office hit. It was the biggest success for director John Woo, who also directed Mission: Impossible 2 and Hard Target.

No release date has been set for the untitled Face/Off sequel.

Director Adam Wingard emphasizes new Face/Off is a sequel: 'We would absolutely never remake Face/Off '

Godzilla v. Kong director Adam Wingard is a big fan of John Woo's 1997 action-fest Face/Off.

Director Adam Wingard sure does love seeing movie icons go mano a mano. The Death Note filmmaker's latest movie is the just-released big beast battle Godzilla vs. Kong while he and writer Simon Barrett are currently developing a sequel to Face/Off, the 1997 movie which saw John Travolta's cop and Nicolas Cage's criminal swap visages. Turns out, Wingard has long loved John Woo's action-fest.

"It's one of my favorite movies," says the director, who previously collaborated with Barrett on 2011's You're Next, 2014's The Guest, and 2016's Blair Witch. "It was announced as a remake and I just want to say we would absolutely never remake Face/Off, because it's one of the best films ever made. When I was a kid, it's the film that really introduced me to slow motion. I never had thought about slow motion as a tool really. You look at Face/Off and, like, 80 percent of it's in slow motion. So, that was a big turning point for me. I have a high regard for that film. I shouldn't say anything too concrete about what the plans are, [but] what Simon and I are writing, which we're extremely excited about, is a direct sequel to the original film."

Godzilla vs. Kong is now available to watch in theatres and on HBO Max.
