Joe Biden gets key endorsement from Congressman James Clyburn (S.C. pretty much a lock now)

The only question was whether Clyburn would publicly endorse Biden or not endorse anyone during the primaries - there really was no other possible scenario. Bloomberg's not on the ballot; Steyer has spent MILLIONS but few people in SC take him seriously.
Joe Biden gets key endorsement from party's most senior black leader, South Carolina Democratic powerbroker James Clyburn days before primary
  • Clyburn is the longest serving member of the South Carolina delegation and a senior member of the Congressional Black Caucus
  • His annual fish fry is a major political event in the state
  • His endorsement comes after a Democratic free-for-all on the debate stage
  • He spoke emotionally about his own background and his late wife, Emily, as well as his reason to 'break my silence'

Democratic powerbroker Rep. James C. Clyburn threw his political muscle behind former Vice President Joe Biden in South Carolina Wednesday, in what he arranged as a dramatic gesture three days before the primary.

Clyburn, the longest serving member of the South Carolina delegation and a senior member of the Congressional Black Caucus, plugged the announcement days in advance for maximum impact.

Clyburn spoke emotionally about his own background and his late wife, Emily, as well as his reason to 'break my silence.'

'I am fearful for the future of this country,' he told reporters and a bank of TV cameras in North Charleston, before voicing his support for 'My good friend – my late wife’s great friend, Joe Biden.'

He said he could think of no one 'better suited, better prepared – I can think of no one with the integrity, no one more committed to the fundamental principles that make this country what it is,' than Biden.

Clyburn said he decided to talk after speaking to an elderly constituent at a funeral.

'I’ve been saying to many, I’ve known for a long time who I would vote for. But I had not decided whether or not to share it with the public,' he said.

'But I want the public to know that I am voting for Joe Biden, south Carolinians should be voting for Joe Biden.'

He spoke hours after Democrats clashed in a free-for-all on the debate stage in Charleston, where Biden had several forceful moments in a pile-up where moderators struggled to keep control of the conversation.

The move comes as Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders has been rising in the state and nationally, following his strong performances in Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada.
Clyburn, at times on the verge of tears, spoke about his work in the civil rights movement, and about the affection his late wife had for Biden.

'It’s hard to know what to say. For real,' said Biden.

Clyburn recalled that his late wife told him to always use billboards when he campaigned.

Accepting the endorsement, Biden said his own late wife had asked him to put up billboards.

'Wanted to have billboards, for real,' he said. 'A billboard that she came up with, one saying: 'For all our families.'

Then Biden pivoted to a slam on Sanders.

'Today people are talking about a revolution. What the country’s looking for are results. What they’re looking for is security. 'What they’re looking for is to be able to sustain and maintain their dignity,' Biden said.

He also blasted gun manufacturers in a community still scarred by gun violence and the shootings at the Mother Emanuel AME church. He repeated a slam at those who have opposed gun control measures and those who backed a law immunizing gun manufacturers. It was another dig at Sanders, this time without a flub he committed at Tuesday's debate.

He told gun makers: 'I’m coming for you. It’s got to stop.'

'South Carolina chooses presidents. It decided Bill Clinton to the WH. And up to that time it didn’t look like he was going very far,' said Biden.

'You launched by buddy Barack Obama to the White House. And I firmly believe, once again on Saturday you hold in your hands in South Carolina the power to choose the next president of the united States.'

He added: 'And I am here, heart and soul, with everything I’ve got to earn the support of the people of South Carolina. Nothing is expected or guaranteed,' he said ... If you send me out of South Carolina with a victory, there will be no stopping us. We will win the nomination, we will win the presidency, and most importantly we will eliminate the fear so many have int this country of a second term of Donald Trump.

Biden made an expansive pledge on diversity, vowing to show it in his appointments.

'That includes the White House. That includes the staff there. That includes the cabinet that includes the Supreme Court and the Congress,' he said.

'As president I’d be honored, honored to appoint the first African American woman to the court,' he said. ;It should look like the country. It’s long past time.'

Sanders' camp wasn't optimistic Tuesday night. 'No, you know, there's been a lot of reporting of who it's going to be and I suspect it's not us,' said Jeff Weaver, a senior campaign adviser to Sanders.

The event was attended by Clyburn family members and former South Carolina mayor Joe Riley.

'I know Joe Biden. I know his character, his heart, and his record,” Clyburn tweeted.

Clyburn's annual fish fry is a major political event in the state. In Congress, he serves as the House majority whip, the No. 3 Democratic leadership post. He staged the event at Trident Technical College inside his districts.

BTW Clyburn's wife Ms Emily passed in September, 2019 and pretty much every national Democratic officeholder who mattered attended the funeral. Congress literally shut down and cancelled all votes for that day. John Lewis, Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden all spoke; Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, and many other 2020 candidates all scored seats on the front pew, etc. Even Marianne Williamson showed up to pay her respects - but Bernie Sanders was nowhere to be found. Admittedly, Bernie is only a Democrat for the puposes of the presidential primary season. :dunno:

Clyburn endorsed Hillary in 2008.....

Look who won.

His endorsement is not a guarantee for anything.
That is complete and total revisionist BULLSHIT... and you probably knew that before you posted this easily disproven LIE, but did so anyway. :beatyourass:

Clyburn remained neutral before the 2008 primary just as he usually does, but went VERY public before the SC primary directly chastizing Bill Clinton because of perceived race baiting by the Hillary campaign.

Clyburn officially endorsed Obama right ahead of the Texas primary - months before the Democratic Convention - and urged others to rally behind Barack.

Bidenstein don’t have shit locked. That’s one state.
And we are only talking about one state SOUTH CAROLINA.
Stick to lurking while grown folks are discussing politics...
:ssshhh:
And Biden will still be behind in Delegates...

This gives him a little life until Super Tuesday....
Super Tuesday is only 72 hours later, so your "a little life" comment makes ZERO sense. I'm definitely "anyone but Trump", but no one (who matters) has ever accused me of being a Biden cheerleader. My predictions are based on actually counting the votes and facing the reality of this specific scenario. THIS is why I say the Clyburn endorsement is so major; feel free to disagree, but bring receipts if you want a serious dialogue debate.

Right now Bernie has ~45 committed delegates, Bootyboy has ~25 and Biden has ~15 - third place but still as many as everyone else COMBINED. Bernie definitely has the momentum, but Black people in SC just ain't feeling a Socialist Democrat like that. Bootyboy does not have a chance in hell of getting more an a delegate or two, and Warren's campaign is free fall fading so fast she might not get any delegates either. Steyer is actually polling THIRD right now but it won't get him any delegates - however he will siphon Black votes from Biden and prevent any landslide. Bloomberg would have done some serious damage, but he's not on the SC ballot, and the others are all non-factors.

South Carolina has 63 delegates. The Clyburn endorsement pre-primary is significant enough to sway most of the undecideds towards Joe, especially since he didn't fuck up too much in the most recent debate. The way the delegates are distributed, Biden should now get a minimum of 40, which will vault him back into contention ahead of Super Tuesday. The *REAL* question mark is how much Mike Bloomberg will cut into the delegate count on Super Tuesday, and which campaigns does he draw votes from? Until those questions are better answered, all bets are OFF.

That's why this is no revelation. What CBC member AIN'T gonna endorse Biden (barring any of the Progressive members) is who's gonna surprise me.

You act like Tim Scott ain't a Right-Winger. The man was in the Tea Party. He useful. White voters got him his seat because he espoused what they wanted to hear from a Black mouth.

Doesn’t matter. They could’ve easily found a white man to run and win that seat.

stop making excuses for that flawed theory.

Tim Scott is no more of a puppet than any of the so-called black democrats elected in those spots.

And that will be the one that we know isn’t on the DNC payroll.

The actual TRUTH is that the majority of CBC members have either not officially endorsed ANYONE or else they have switched to a second choice after their first choice dropped out. For example:

Pete Buttageig is currently being endorsed by CBC member Anthony Brown
Elizabeth Warren is currently being endorsed by CBC member Ayanna Pressley
Bernie Sanders is currently being endorsed by CBC member Ilhan Omar
Mike Bloomberg is currently being endorsed by at least a half dozen CBC members

Both Kamala Harris and Cory Booker had multiple CBC endorsements before they dropped out - and those are known just off the top of my head before checking the links below

They COULD have but there was a Black dude who was down with the Tea Party who is smack dab in the middle of a Blue District. He was rewarded awarded the seat as a pat on the back to begin with.
Tim Scott is JUST AS MUCH of a puppet as the rest of them...that's how the game is played.

I'll tell you this much, the next president will be able to put in at least two supreme court justices, and if Trump wins again and puts in two young republican conservative white men we as black people are fucked.

Which should tell you democrats don’t give a shit or they would’ve done a better job strategizing. They are both white led parties and thats all that matters to them.
