IT IS WHAT IT IS

Steelers running back Le'Veon Bell played this season under the franchise tag, and the two-time All-Pro told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler that if Pittsburgh were to place him on the franchise tag for next season, he "would definitely consider" sitting out the season or even retiring from the NFL.

Bell, 25, has played five seasons with the Steelers after spending three years at Michigan State. He told Fowler that he is happy with his football career so far and is not concerned about making as much money as possible, but instead with setting a precedent for other running backs to be paid in relation to their value and usage.

"I just want to be valued where I'm at," Bell told Fowler. "If I am playing this game, I want to set standards for all the other running backs behind me like Todd Gurley and Ezekiel Elliott, Melvin Gordon, guys like that. I'm a guy they can kind of look at. I feel I can do that. I'm in a position where I can do that and I'm going to do it."

Under the franchise tag this year, Bell made $12.1 million. That number is expected to increase to around $14.5 million next season, according to Fowler. Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that prior to this season Bell turned down a five-year deal that would have gotten him $30 million in the first two seasons.

Bell told Fowler that if the Steelers want to reach an agreement for a long-term deal this offseason they need to "value" him. Bell added that he doesn't need football to stay happy and he has already made enough money for his family.

"Just get the numbers straight exactly where we want them," Bell told Fowler. "I'm not going to settle for anything. I know what I do and what I bring to the table. I'm not going out here getting the ball 400 times if I'm not getting what I feel I'm valued at."

This season, Bell rushed a league-high 321 times for 1,291 yards and nine touchdowns and caught 85 passes for 655 yards and two touchdowns.

Man this is big. Jones-Drew let me down previously. I hope he stays the course.

Obviously he's smarter with his chips. Future players need to take heed. This could be huge if he holds out all the way.

Nothing against the Steelers. It's bigger than that.

Man fuck him.....I drafted his ass in fantasy football league....don't keep up with football enough anymore to know he might really sit out this damn long......i'm fucked

Leaving a lot of money on the table. Not sure anyone is giving him 42 Mil upfront either.

And if he'd went out there on another franchise tag, after honoring one year under it already at the most physically wearing position in the game, and blew out his knee(s), he wasn't going to see another $42M up-front either. That said, the 2nd FT is something that players before him signed off on which was a bad move. But it isn't like he didn't make bread last year, didn't make bread before that; what's sitting out on the principled argument when you're already rich?

Shit he's worth every bit of it tho...

Watch he take 32 upfront from the Patriots
Steelers offered that and he refused. They couldn't set aside more cause as you see they need help on defense. We are thin as hell at outside and middle linebacker and they set aside 14.5 mil for Bell this season, which is why they didn't sign another defensive player. Looks like a bad move especially since Bell didn't sign it. Bell would have got 32 Mil first two years for 70 mill over 5. It's not like the Steelers chumped him off completely. And there's no way the Patriots pay him that money. It's not what they do. Only good news for the Steelers is each week that 850,000 Bell doesn't make goes back towards their salary cap.

Long as he didn't blow his money it's cool. I'm not mad at him. He has to do what's best for him at this point. But it's not like the Steelers didn't make him a good offer

Zero fucks given about your fantasy team famo.

Le Veon should hold strong.

good for your dumb ass. pisses me off when people talk about fantasy football like its real life.

Real life? What the fuck is yo dumb ass talking about? It’s “fantasy” football Einstein. Google the word “fantasy.”

The Steelers are wasting their time if they don t pay that man and get him on the field ASAP.........

Conner is a back up and throwing the ball 60+ times in a game does not make a winning team

Offense is not the Steelers problem at all. It's the defense. Keith Butler needs to fuckin go!!!! ASAP!! You score 37 points at home with 0 turnovers your suppose to win that game!! Period!! It falls on the defense.

Um if you have to throw 60+ times a game that will be an issue.

What I’m saying is folks out here be saying I picked him in fantasy and now he ain’t playing life it’s some real life shit. Bell is protecting himself and his future in real life. Them Cacs at work be all worked up over the anthem and shit but then next sentence be yapping about fantasy football like it’s real life. People regulate players to essentially nothing talking about fantasy football.
