An aspiring rapper was shot and killed Tuesday night just feet away from the Bronx housing development he used as a backdrop for his music video, police said.

Melvin Batties, 34, was shot once in the neck in the courtyard of the Sedgwick Houses on W. 174th St. near Popham Ave. in Morris Heights just before 7:10 p.m., cops said.

Batties was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he died.

“He didn't make it. He was a good person. He was loved by everyone,” said his sobbing sister, Nikki Fuller, 37.

“He was a great brother and a great father. He leaves behind three kids, two of them twins.”

Batties, who rapped under the name Phanelli Deblasio, died at the spot where he performed during a neighborhood festival last summer, said Jada Johnson, 18.

“He was on his way. There are videos of him performing on Sedgwick Day in the courtyard,” she said. “He was a good dude.”

RIP to dude...

Regarding your question, I'd say 35. If you haven't made it by 35 and don't have any leads or connections that can put you on another level, it's time to let that dream die.

Rap is a young man's game, and no one wants to listen to a 35 year old, unless they are established and known.

Hopefully by 35 cats already have options to fall back on. Kind of hard putting "Aspiring Rapper" on a resume.

There some people that started acting in their 50's, some people started writing books in their 60's, opening up eateries in their 50s, so why can't a dude be in his 30s or up still trying to rap?! The nig that made thechacha slide wasn't young, how bout the old guys that made the song macarena.. Some people are juss 1 hit away.. My boy started his IG comedian career in his 30s and he make good enough money to quit his day job and live well enough to take care of himself and daughter off it

Yes because young people (especially CACs who buy and primarily listen to and support rap) want to hear an unknown rapper in his mid to late 50s...

No one wants to see an old man in a club.

The Hip Hop genre doesn't translate to older ages as other genres do.

People can get away with becoming writers, actors or comedians at a late age, or even breaking big in other music genres.

Hip Hop? Nope, it's a young man's genre.

Think of every song jay, nas, rick Ross , etc made after 30 that was a hit.. What makes you think some 30+ yr old unknown can't make a similar track.. Jay z in his late 40s and people still buy his music, so why do you think somebody else in similar age can't make a 4:44 to

They were already established after 30.

No one is trying to listen to an unknown middle aged rapper.

Naw sounds like you a label whore.. Take your cell phone, take away the name and stamp another unknown name on it, and let it cost a fraction of the price, would you buy it? If the answer is no that means ur a label whore and that is a you thing and a segment of the population is like that but not every1 is like that.. If I took away the big name and took the same album and let some unknown artist perform it some people would actually still listen and buy it meanwhile the label whores wont

I agree but I still say its your life do what makes you happy..

but you are correct... the game just changes so much...

when I was growing up the worst thing you could do is bite someone elses style, lyrics, persona...

if you sounded like someone else you will get called out on that shit with the quickeness..

this muthafucka action bronson just jacked ghostface killers whole style, got called on it..

and his fan base aint even bat a fuckin eye...

if you are over forty and you want to make hip hop videos because it gets you through the day.. aint nothing wrong with that..

but if you tryin to win grammys and go on a global tour selling out stadiums, you may want to rethink your hobby...

back then it was about lyrics and flow, now its about face tatts, money phones, posing with fire arms.... pink dreads, icy wrists and icyer fronts.

oh and light skin asian lookin hoes. these lil kniggas love them some lightskin asian lookin hoes..

I agree with you to some extent. If you are talking about pop culture yes it's a young man's world. Hip hop culture is now 40+ years old and the people who love it are also aging. You can still have a career in hip hop music at any age. you just have to know who your audience is. Furthermore, I view hip hop music as an art not just as consumer goods. There is no age limit on creativity and expression.

This man gets it

Make Music (or whatever you want to do ) as a side hustle. When the demand goes to where you need to walk away......you are all ready to go.

all these responses and not one even closely related to the question...

maybe this will help

adjective
adjective: aspiring
  1. directing one's hopes or ambitions toward becoming a specified type of person.
    "an aspiring artist"

I think we are seeing you can be a hip hop artist at any age. It’s a matter of content. If he is talking about slinging drugs and clubbing at 40 and he is not been on then it’s a wrap.

But, I’ve heard some independent cats around my age that I’ve been able to relate to on many levels.

We just haven’t had a breakout artist at 40 but it’s coming. Rick Ross didn’t really have success until his 30s, Jay pushing 50. Its a matter of time until we see a new artist at 40 come out and grab some shine.

Me personally I say go into management lol

Exactly.. Its all about content and promotion.. There is a sound or lyrics that can easily catch each individuals ear on this board attention.. In certain cases it mite be so good ur willing to support that song or album.. Whose to say the content that you enjoyed can only be done by somebody less than 30 yrs of age.. That's like saying you can only buy and eat a great cheeseburger from somebody over the age 25

You also gotta remember you, me, and a few other business owners see "aspiring" completely different than someone who isn't running their own business.
