The former House oversight committee chairman was first elected to Congress in 2000.

“Secretary Clinton won this district by a huge margin in 2016, and the cohort of strong Democratic challengers, unprecedented grassroots activism, and historic investment by the DCCC in Southern California means we are in a strong position to elect a Democrat to the 49th District this fall,” said Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spokesman Drew Godinich.

Rep. Steve Stivers (R-Ohio), chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, noted the multiple candidates Democrats have running in Issa’s district, saying it’s “fast becoming one of the bloodiest primaries in America.”

“While Democrats fight with each other, Republicans will focus on fighting Democrats ― and that’s how we plan to win,” he said. “We look forward to facing whoever limps out of the Democrats’ battle royale: black and blue, and broke.”

As the former chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Issa gained a reputation for being a fierce critic of President Barack Obamagoing after the administration on the Benghazi, Libya, terrorist attack, the IRS and the “Fast and Furious” gun-running scandal.

Issa’s district has changed considerably over the years, becoming more diverse and less conservative. In an attempt to appeal to his new voting base, the one-time Obama antagonist sent out a mailer last cycle touting praise from the former president.

In recent months, at least 30 House Republicans have announced they will leave Congress, according to CNN. Several Senate Republicans have also announced their plans to retire, including Jeff Flake (Ariz.) and Bob Corker (Tenn.).

All them republicans are acting funny now something is on the horizon wish I had Nance on speed dial he knows what's going down!

Issa knows exactly what happened in regard to Assange, Wikileaks, Seth Rich, Awan brothers and the false Russia collusion narrative.

Kind of sounds like he doesn’t want to face the aftermath when the entire shitpile of DC goes up in flames.

The second richest members of Congress is calling it quits, as California Republican Rep. Darrell Issa announced his retirement on Wednesday.

Issa, who comes from a San Diego district and is reportedly worth $250 million, said he will not seek re-election later this year, though would finish his ninth term in Congress.

Issa, the former chairman of the powerful House Oversight Committee, is the most recent Republican lawmaker deciding to retire instead of facing a challenging re-election fight this fall.

Democrats had made defeating Issa one of their top priorities in the midterm elections.

When at the helm of the committee, Issa dogged then-President Barack Obama with probes into the 2012 killings of four Americans in Benghazi, Libya, and IRS mistreatment of conservative groups.

He also took the lead in investigating the so-called Fast and Furious operation, in which federal agents allowed criminals to buy guns with the intention of tracking them to criminal organizations.

The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives lost most of the guns, including two that were found at the scene of the death of a U.S. Border Patrol agent. Republicans slammed Attorney General Eric Holder for years over the scandal.

He won by about 1,600 votes in his last election and Democratic challengers have lined up to take him on in a midterm election that generally favors the party not in control of the White House.

'We look forward to facing whoever limps out of the Democrats' battle royale: black and blue, and broke,' said Rep. Steve Stivers, chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee.

Democrats noted that Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton won the district by a large margin.

'California Republicans clearly see the writing on the wall and realize that their party and its priorities are toxic to their re-election chances in 2018,' said Drew Godinich, spokesman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Democrats need to win 24 GOP-controlled seats to win control of the chamber and are looking to California to help them get there.

Two days earlier, Rep. Ed Royce, R-Calif., decided not to seek re-election after completing his service as chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

There are just 14 Republicans representing California from the state's 53 Congressional districts.

Now Democrats have the opportunity to pick off two seats.

Beyond the two Californian House members, 16 other Republican House members have announced their retirement.

Additionally, Sen. Bob Corker, a Tennessee Republican and Sen. Jeff Flake, an Arizona Republican, have both announced they will not run again for their seats, potentially opening the race up to a Democratic challenger.

Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch, a Republican, is retiring as well.
