Why the Jamaican Beef Patty Is a NYC Icon

beef patty with cheese... makes me cringe

only thing I would add to a beef patty is coco bread
if u hate that than u'd really hate this

Ppl who never ate a real Jamaican patty don't know that the crust must be flaky, almost like a croissant. You look in the bottom of a patty bag and all you should see is a lot of flaky crust. I've never had a patty in the U.S. where they got the crust right.

New York Times receives backlash after saying NYC staple beef patty was ‘extending its reach’

Many New Yorkers are no strangers to the Jamaican beef patty.

The Kingston Tropical Bakery in the Wakefield neighborhood in the Bronx has been serving the Caribbean staple for decades.

“I’ve been here for 37 years, and we’ve been around for 47,” explained manager Caroline Sinclair.

So many eyebrows were raised after a recent New York Times article. The paper pondered the patty may grow to be as popular as the taco or pizza.

The Jamaican beef patty is sold in bakeries, pizzerias, and even supermarkets across the country, which is partly why the New York Times article received a swift backlash online.

One person tweeted, “they’re about to gentrify beef patties. Another wrote on social media, “this is right up there with the NYT discovering the chopped cheese.”

The author of the Times article explained online, she spoke with Jamaicans who are keeping the authenticity of the patty alive.

Smh its not that serious. How do you gentrify a fuckin beef patty?

Yes the flaky crust is a must
The golden krust BY ME has the perfect flaky crust

That been going since the early 90s
Damn bruh? Where u been? How long u been out of nyc?

tell i been gone a minute...lol

i left mid to late 80`s & never really went back like talking about...

i just started putting cheese on my patty maybe late 2000`s...& i dont split it either...:giggle::giggle::giggle:

this shit is really new to me...i`m actually bugging...i wanna taste one now...

yup...when u eat that shit while driving shit should b all over ur pants & in the bottom of the bag...lol

Never had one, looks good though.

Chicken and Beef Pasty's are popular here in MI, which share a similar origin as the Patty's. I would love a spicier version of a Beef Pasty.

What? Mayo? Lettuce? Tomatoes?! Some cheap Kraft cheese, not even a slice of Jamaican cheese? Kind of fuckery is this?!?!

Fuck all the way outta here with this blasphemy.

(Still not that serious though. Ny and Chicago pizza are nothing like pizza in Italy, and tacos in mexico are nothing like tacos in Taco Bell. Different regions will put their own spin on it).

Damn ive been to almost every spot in that video.

And ive never put cheese on my patty. Beef, chicken, or vegetable patty with coco bread thats it.

Some of you cats act like motherfucker's are predestined to prepare and eat foods a certain way...fuck outta here. If I want a traditional patty...I'll buy one...if I want cheese on, I'll get one, and wish a mf say some slick shit...in all seriouness...though, I appreciate traditional foods, but I equally appreciate variations of traditional shit as well.

i'm laughing at how much a nig take for granted..i never knew a beef patty was so exclusive outside of ny until reading this thread lol.. the fact slam never heard of a beef patty with cheese got me dying..sounds like another thing that if u put this shit in another town u generate mad money off it..juss sell beef patty with cheese and chop cheese and make a killing.. once again i be trying to tell people sometime all u got to do is move a certain product to another area and u'll make a killing off it..ny got a lot of those as well as other states(bbq spots and that chi pizza i swear to god would make mad money in ny)

:dunno:anything is possible cause the company is horrible on consistency - and GK really doesn't
know what the franchisees are doing almost every restaurant seems to have different rules and cooks different recipes

I was lucky enough to chop it up with Mr. Hawthorne a few years back, I was setting up an intro to a Jamaican artist to license some of his designs and work - as we talked about a few things concerning uniform branding in the stores - I mentioned that I found the freshness of the patties disappointing and inconsistent across the stores - he told me that every patty is made at his factory and delivered - if there is a problem in consistency it's because franchisees aren't training workers to follow GK instructions
He then said he wants to implement a lot of what McDs does for quality control - but he's also focused on expanding the franchises...

Last time I went...

They placed the patties and coco bread exposed part out of the bag ...

On the counter.

I said I don't want that

you put my food ON THE COUNTER.

She almost took the coco bread knife and hopped the counter to slit my throat.
