Steve Harvey's National Mentoring Camp: Natural Hair ≠ Success. Thoughts?

I'm hoping to find some videos footage of this. I came across some tweets and discussion about the event he held this past week. (You can normally click on he first tweet and follow the discussion down, but I posted several of the ones in the discussion because I know not everyone uses twitter.) Black hair and natural hair in general is always something unprofessional to be tamed. I know some black colleges do not want their students to have natural hair or locs, and with Anthony Mackie's comments last year this rubbed me the wrong way more than usual. Thoughts?

Interesting thread. When did Mackie make this comment?

The fact that this event was sponsored by the u.s. army pretty much tells it all...1st step in controlling the inside is to control the outside..

Bro respectfully, That is cowardly logic. I do not understand how the prior generation thought they could defeat racism by giving into it and playing respectability politics. Ita a game where the goal posts are forever moving and so we will always loose.

The Natural texture of hair is not a style, hence the term natural. Workplace dress codes that start with the primise that whiteness is the norm and therby margilalize our hair and grooming methods that make since for us should be challenged in every way including in court. We should not be passing yet another unsolved problem to the next generation.

that is exactly what you are doing by not having your own corporations.

ain't nobody saying straighten your hair.....

and there are two separate things at play.

one is getting your foot in the door the other is if and what are the work place dress codes.

most places don't have dress codes per say in regards to hair style.

most have them in regards to dress.....casual, business causal, business.

but at the end stop being so extreme...you know damn well there are people you would not hire based on their appearance.

and all that rah rah shit is so unrealistic.

if your business was sales you would not let an employee go to a potential client with their pants sagging and their draws showing...

and nobody says if you dress this way racism will disappear that is just dumb as rationale.

but if you know racism and biases exist what point are you making but adding to their excuses ?

why not light a cigarette in their office.

go ahead a fart...it's natural.

Lets be real about the world of white business. There's always a dress code especially when your looking for a job, even more if your black. Lets say you want to apply for a bank job. Better than 99% of the banks in the US are owned and operated by whites. Banks as is most businesses are concerned about their image. That said if you arrive for your job interview not respecting the business you have no shot at that job.The only exception I know of is the tech world.

Our mistake is we let our leisure life control too much of our lives. You don't show up wearing a tank top, jeans, shorts, sagging pants, Timbs, gold grills, flip-flops or bling hanging everywhere. Sweaters won't work either. Male or female YOU WEAR A SUIT OR A DRESS.

I believe Steve Harvey is trying to get our youth that's just graduating prepared for the business world. As I stated earlier, there's always a dress code and your appearance matters more than you can ever imagine. Sadly that also means your hair. So if your determined to wear dreads or braids your shit better be right.

When you show up you dress like you run the place not looking like you want a job. Suit and tie might not be our thing but if you want that job handle your business. Your the one who wants a job.

Those talking the loudest are either not in corporate world or they are just trying to hard to soapbox and going to extremes

Some dress code rules are also safety related..especially if you are working on machinery

You make valid points.

Mostly the dress codes are to protect the company's image nothing more. When customers look in the window or visit the company location the company wants that customer to feel at ease.

If that customer is looking at tats, nose piercings, and employees dressed more for the park than the office most likely there will be no business transacted with that customer.

It 's the Steve Harvey camp. He can do whatever he wanna do at his camp. Broke ass black twitter need to start their own all natural hair camp.

I Colin'd most of this thread but I know Steve bama ass belong to the gubment.
Not trying to derail but I see him doing a whole lotta preaching lately

More reason than ever for us to work for our own and employ our own and navigate and play by our own rules. That's way easier than it sounds because the hard part is over. You're qualified. You've got the piece of paper they use to determine worth. You're worth it.
Someone has to step up so that the rest can work with and for them.

This is probably the wrong thread to mention this but I'll continue to use it for EVERY time someone mentions this: "Everybody can't be a boss, entrepreneur, open a business."

This is very true. It takes a certain personality, certain level of patience, and self-discipline to get the ball rolling.

Most people can't even control their lower level habits (drinking, smoking, chasing pussy all day, etc), so they definitely lack the capacity to take on business ownership

I feel you. if enough of us tried, more of us would be and probably alot more than you and me think. If we tried to build businesses as much as we tried to be rappers, play sports and chase after pussy like you mention we would ne alright. I think slowly alot of us are going to start to get it but it starts with the young people.

OK the Oscar snubs we should all be used to by now but what he seems to be referring to is how certain images we seem to gravitate towards tend to fit directly into the police profile images. I'm not sure he's wrong in that regard. We as a people just seem to be overly sensitive about changing our image.

“Like my nephew wanted to grow dreadlocs. I’m like fine, I’ll sit you down and I’ll watch The First 48 with you and everybody you see on that show, that’s doing something wrong, they’re black dudes with dreadlocs. So, do you want to be seen as part of the problem or do you want to be an individual?”

“Let’s just say you have locs and you walking down the street. The police pull you over and say you fit the description of somebody. You start yelling and arguing with the cops. Next thing you know you pressed up against the wall going to jail for something you’re not even involved in just because you look like somebody and you don’t know how to handle yourself.”

OK. So let's say everyone has a standard low corporate haircut, Obama style. Let's say everyone dresses appropriately, doesn't sag, no tattoos, gold teeth etc.

Does that stop young men from being caught up and over policed? Would he have not still "fit the description"? What does the "criminal look" become then?

But in saying this we kind of miss the point

Or i feel when people talk about this stuff we aren't honest with the discussion.

It is NOT for everyone. Every white person ain't a boss or a business person either. Not even most of them are.

It's about those of us who are able to do it, doing it and then hiring worker bees who look like us and building up our own shit.

that's the real thing we should be striving for.

If you're black and have the get up to build a black business no matter what the field, hire MOSTLY black people who are qualified to be in your business and build it up.

When it gets bigger hire more black people

And more and more

That's what these white companies do that we have to "play the game for" keep it a damn 5 to 1 white to other nationality ratio

we need to do the same thing.

When you look at some of these big ass black companies and their employees are nothing but white folks

that's why the fuck we're losing

This should all be common sense, also we have to get out of the mentality that we have to do it alone. People think Zuckerberg and Gates and Jobs did it all by themselves. Again I'm not saying everyone CAN do it, But if more people TRIED more black businesses would exist. Keep this mentality up along with us hiring us and those of us that fall short can take a position in a company full of people that look like us.

I have a problem with Harvey and Perry because they encourage the same cycle. Get a hair cut and dress proper so that you can get a job with a white own company....these boys will paas that mentality down and we'll never get anywhere. Kudos to all Twitter calling them out on that bullshit tho.

Sounds stupid as fuck IMHO. Unless it's against the dress code at the job, why would you cut your fucking hair? Simply tell children to respect the dress codes at their places of employment or schools. Fuck is this shit about cutting dreads or natural hair on some preemptive fuckery?

Damn, its been a minute since a agreed with you.

Co sign!

Respect!
