A complete smokescreen. Actually Black and Hispanics make up 19% of all Bachelor degrees and around 17% of all Masters degrees.

Additionally, Google is trying to focus on the CS degree issue so that you don't look at their non tech and leadership diversity numbers.

This right here is the truth. I have MS in software engineering. I have tons of experience. You cannot tell by legal name if I'm white or black because it is so fucking common. If I update my resume on dice.com, careerbuilder.com and monster.com tomorrow, by Wednesday I will get at least 50 calls. Seriously, literally 50 calls. Some of the calls be for major companies. But, once they realize I'm black their tone in their voice completely change. They start asking questions not to include me but to exclude me. They see what is on my resume and the technologies I have experience in but start asking shit that they know I have not done. I say to them I have years in the field and picking up new languages or technologies is very simple for me because that is the nature of the profession. Things are constantly changing. To them IT is a white/east indian/asian boys game. I have even had the chair of the computer science department when I was in undergrad state that black cannot program computers. So the 2% at Google or any other IT company does not surprise me one bit.

How when there's less than 5% in computer science based degrees? They can't hire people who don't exist. If you think it should be more, then you need to encourage more of us to study STEMs in college.

Let me share some insight...when you have a homogenized group of people doing the sourcing, screening and making the hiring decisions, then you will inevitably have a homogeneous workforce. Secondly, you must NEVER allow anyone, nor yourself to be called a minority...that term is dangerous, untrue, and in my opinion one of the core reasons why this society view or value as less than. justmy2cents#

I'm 100% in the same boat. Just not in the exact same field. Its very frustrating. I can update my resume, put it up and the next day get bombarded with calls and emails for positions. I'm more in the field of Director levels of IT roles. I'll speak to entire teams over the phone, but the second I meet in person, things change almost instantly. One time I met with a team of VP's and after it was over the recruiting firm rep actually said they were racist. He was clearly upset(he was a white guy), said he didn't want to give me the details but wasn't going to work with them again. I have three face to face interviews coming up this week. I'm dreading them. Last year I have a final interview for a upper level management spot with a large company here in saint Louis. As I was being lead to the VP's office, nothing but white faces giving me looks of, "what the fuck you doing here". I mean a sea of fucking white faces. No Asian, no Hispanic, no Indian, like 20 people in IT all white.

It frustrates me to no end.

Of the students that get in to these institutions, how many are scoring the highest marks? Then of those can you breakdown how many ACTUALLY WANT TO WORK FOR GOOGLE?

I think it's important to note that if you want to hire more blacks, one needs to make a real effort to do so. From my experiences with them, I don't believe they do go out of their way to hire blacks (unless it's for Google Africa). I think Google is about making money and doesn't give a shit... Does that make them inherently BAD? Or does it just make them a white company that looks out for itself? As always...

Also not sure about your reality, but in mine blacks are very underrepresented in Corporate law, Non-Retail Banking, PE, VC, top Corporate Finance positions.... So this isn't anything new...

For instance:

Corporate law (article 2 days ago) 1.9% of Corporate law partners are black, black associates are scarce

And another thing, have we thought that b/c most Google jobs are in Mountainview California (largely White and Asian) many blacks self-select out of living in that area and want to be on the East Coast, and in the South?

Google has offices in other cities, but most of the gigs are on West Coast.

One final thing. You do realize that the top feeder schools for Google have small representations of blacks--if any! That's the UC schools in California

i have chilled with Google(nexus 5 launches, chromebook 11, google play revival) for various events and i realistically cant remember seeing one black person there working for them.

I know exactly how your are feeling. Same shit has happen to me. Recruiter one time stated he never tell people why they get turned down but he told me and he was pissed. He basically called it what it is, racism because my background and experience was perfect for the job. Thing was he knew I was black and the lady I was to interview with was black as well. It just happen the day of the interview she was out sick or something so I was interviewed by a young white woman and young white boy. I knew when I walked in I was not going to get the job by the looks on their faces. BS in Computer Science, BA in Mathematics and MS in Software Engineering and get played like I'm dumb as fuck.

First, there was her name: Professor Sabrina. She was an African American woman, kept office hours until 2 a.m. if that's what it took to see everyone, and had an additional title: Google In Residence.

Today 35 percent of African Americans receiving computer science degrees come from those schools, but they don't make their way to Silicon Valley's top tech firms. Google is typical — about 1 percent of its technical staffers are black.

Last year a push by civil rights advocate Jesse Jackson prompted several dozen tech firms to release workforce diversity data which showed under-representation of African Americans, Latinos and women in the field.

In response, businesses, universities and community leaders have launched initiatives aimed at diversifying their ranks, both ethnically and by gender. The Anita Borg Institute and the National Center for Women and Information Technology have partnered with many companies to support female engineers.

Facebook offers "Facebook University," an internship for low income minority college freshmen interested in computer science. Intel has committed $300 million over the next five years toward diversifying its workforce, while Apple has a $50 million partnership with nonprofits to support women and minority computer science majors.

Google decided to go to the source, sending a handful of software engineers to teach at Howard, Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia, Fisk University in Nashville, and Spelman and Morehouse colleges in Atlanta.

They taught introductory courses, but they also trained students on everything from how to send a professional email to how to make it through a software engineering job interview, which can involve a lot of time solving coding questions at a white board.

This summer, 30 of those students will be Google interns. And Howard University graduating senior Christopher Hocutt, 21, whose friends jokingly call him Mr. Google, will be starting at the company full-time.

Hocutt said the Google In Residence professors convinced him to apply.

"What they discovered was a lot of people weren't even applying to Google because we didn't believe we were skilled enough to do it," he said. "Once we realized we have the skills, we just needed mentorship to make our resume look good, get through the interview, have confidence to try."

Google software engineer Sabrina Williams, who took a semester away from her Mountain View campus this year to mentor and teach at Howard, is thrilled to see her student becoming a colleague.

"I'm inspired," she said. "Change is slow, this is going to take time, but I think what's interesting about this program is that it's a different way of attacking the problem of lack of diversity in tech."

Fifteen years ago, Williams was the only female African American computer science major at Stanford University. "I kind of felt awkward so I kind of hid a lot," she said. "It was very difficult."

She said that while "teaching is hard" and the hours at Howard were grueling, she welcomed the opportunity to offer students an experience different from her own. This included taking female computer scientists aside early in the semester, telling them she was available for any questions, and encouraging them to support each other.

Legrand Burge, who chairs Howard University's computer science department, welcomes the temporary addition of Google engineers to his faculty.

"They're not academics but they have domain expertise that students could definitely learn a lot from," he said. "The word got out and it actually got a lot of students interested in computer science who didn't initially plan to study it."

Indeed, class sizes have doubled in intro courses. Williams had 70 students in one class; about 250 were taught so far this year by Google engineers at all five schools.

In the 1970s and 80s a similar program partnered the university with AT&T, Bell and Hewlett Packard, Burge said. This time, he said, Google is bringing a disruptive, Silicon Valley mentality to their campus.

"The issue with the East Coast and West Coast ecosystem, is that in the West there's a fail fast, fail often mentality," Burge said. "And there's a disconnect between academia, which does not have that try things out, dare to experiment, fail and learn about why you failed, come back and do better, culture."

This right here is the truth. I have MS in software engineering. I have tons of experience. You cannot tell by legal name if I'm white or black because it is so fucking common. If I update my resume on dice.com, careerbuilder.com and monster.com tomorrow, by Wednesday I will get at least 50 calls. Seriously, literally 50 calls. Some of the calls be for major companies. But, once they realize I'm black their tone in their voice completely change. They start asking questions not to include me but to exclude me. They see what is on my resume and the technologies I have experience in but start asking shit that they know I have not done. I say to them I have years in the field and picking up new languages or technologies is very simple for me because that is the nature of the profession. Things are constantly changing. To them IT is a white/east indian/asian boys game. I have even had the chair of the computer science department when I was in undergrad state that black cannot program computers. So the 2% at Google or any other IT company does not surprise me one bit.

I experienced this all thought out my career. It got to the point where I cant put the name of my school on my resume, I went to an HBCU. They see that and its on the next resume. Well educated and a shit load of credentials but the White girl in the office next to me just had to know some one!!

I was very good at spelling, I went to the state. Of course I was the only black kid and those CAC gave me a hard ass word--rheumatism---I was in 4th grade! They got me out quick!

Anyhow, Im disgusted to say the least.

Because their family unit hasn't be socially destroyed like they destroyed the black family! Those fucker come over here are educated for free in their country and work for a lot less then the average American.

Google for the most part is banned in China. The Chinese probably knew the shit Snowden was talking before he came out. They don't want to brag that they infiltrated and obtain info on their practices. Yet they hire Asians like there is no tomorrow.

They make up shit to get that spyware out of the country. The media portrays it as due to censorship reasons. For that reason American IT products are junk, I am not buying and enriching people that will turn around and collect info covertly.

My dream is being able to power up these devices without being spyed on.
