Armed with flashlights, firefighters workers went from car to car late Tuesday night, rescuing passengers from an Amtrak passenger train that derailed and tipped over in Philadelphia

At least five people died and about 50 hospitalized, including six in critical condition, authorities said. The train was carrying 238 passengers and 5 crew members.

"It is an absolute, disastrous mess," Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter of the crash site.

The Amtrak Northeast Regional Train 188 was traveling from Washington to New York when it derailed north of the city of Philadelphia, Amtrak said. The cause wasn't immediately known.

"We do not know what happened here. We do not know why it happened," Nutter said.

Firefighters arrived to find seven cars and the train's engine either turned over or upside down. Some passengers were able to escape safely. Crews had to cut through the cars to get to others.

"This is a nightmare and it can't be happening," passenger Joan Elfman told CNN affiliate KYW. "There are many, many injured people."

The FBI was on the scene to assist in the investigation, but so far there is nothing to indicate the incident was an act of terrorism. Investigators will the National Transportation Safety Board will arrive in the morning.

Always look to foreign press for the best pictures and scoop...10 cars derailed. 65 injured, 5 dead, 243 passengers. all not accounted for. local workers reported hearing a loud boom or bang. dirt in pics looks indicative of a blast...see for yourself...I'm callin' it now...foul play. Pops worked for railroads for 30 years...I've seen derailments before. This shit here...ain't natural.
C'mon son...

the rail tracks are indented...from something forceful. steel don't bend like that unless high impact. a train car won't do it.

Oh Yay! Conspiracy theorists are here! If this was foul play or an attack, it was a spectacular failure.

Fuck you niggu. :hmm:

A local Fox reporter said he just learned that a Septa train, headed in the opposite direction, at 9:25 last night, at the same area as the derailment, was hit with a "unknown projectile" that smashed the window of the first car. That train stopped in Philly for a fix.
4 minutes later, the other train crashed.

Still think its a game?

FBI Warns of Train Derailment Threat

W A S H I N G T O N, May 8
By Jason A. Ryan

Devices that could be used by terrorists to derail trains are being stolen from rail facilities around the country, the FBI warned today.

Nine derailers, a piece of railroad equipment used to derail train cars for safety purposes in railyards have been stolen recently, sources said, citing the FBI's weekly intelligence bulletin.

The theft of these items is strange since they are of little use outside of the rail industry, according to the bulletin.

Railroads have been targeted in the past by terrorists, the bulletin said.

It specifically mentioned the Oct. 1995 derailment of an Amtrak train in Hyder, Ariz. In that incident, one person was killed and 78 were injured when parts of the track were sabotaged. The FBI located a derail 50 miles from Hyder.

The bulletin does not mention a specific threat, and the FBI has no indication the derail thefts are related to terrorism. The bulletin is distributed weekly to 18,000 state and local law enforcement agencies around the United States.

The bureau has also warned in the past that railways and other mass conveyances could be terrorist targets. http://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=90646

Amtrak train that crashed in Philadelphia, killing 7, was traveling over 100 mph

A speeding Amtrak train was doing more than double the 50 mph limit before a sudden deadly derailment on a sharp curve killed seven people and injured more than 200 others.

Northeast Regional Train 188 was zipping through Philadelphia at more than 100 mph when the engine and its seven passenger cars skidded off the rails, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The body of the seventh victim was pulled from the wreckage Wednesday as first responders combed through the twisted metal in a macabre search for the missing, officials said.

Federal investigators arrived at 4 a.m. Wednesday in the hunt for answers at the Philadelphia disaster.

“We are looking at the track, the train signals ... human performance, to try and understand the factors that led to this,” said Robert Sumwalt of the National Transportation Safety Board.

No answers came Wednesday from the Amtrak train’s engineer, who hired a lawyer and refused to provide any insight on what went wrong one night earlier, Philadelphia police said.

The unidentified engineer declined to make a statement about the wreck.

Among those killed was a U.S. Naval Academy midshipman heading for his Far Rockaway home while on leave from the Annapolis school.

Queens kid Justin Zemser, 20, was appointed to the Naval Academy after his 2013 graduation from the Hurricane Sandy-damaged Channel View School.

A second victim was identified as Jim Gaines, 48, of Plainsboro, N.J., a video software architect with The Associated Press. The married father of two was coming home from a business meeting in Washington when he was killed.

Among the still missing hours after the derailment was Rachel Jacobs, 39, the CEO of the company ApprenNet and a rider on the train.

“We are just frantic, waiting to hear news from my daughter,” said her mom Gilda told the Daily News.

The train’s black box was found and turned over to analysts in hopes of discovering what went wrong Tuesday night as the engine and its seven cars were scattered across the tracks.
