Google Chromecast

I'm going in.

Ordered on Amazon...but currently out of stock.

Question: It says to use for smartphone, tablet, or laptop.

Does it NOT work on PCs?

It should. As long as the PC is on the same network with the ChromeCast, and you are sending a video from a Chrome browser it should work.

"UNLESS" it relies solely on wifi :dunno:

you mean to plug into a pc? or plug it into a tv and use your pc to control it? if the latter, it should work.

Exactly...because I want to know if media on my PC can be sent using Chromecast

as of now u cant send any physical media to it. but im sure devs are on it as of yesterday, first team to nail that down is gonna be winning.

like what if vlc had a chromecast button so any media ur playing with the vlc player, u can just hit a button and send it to the tv...

and i think ur pc would have to be on the wifi network to use it anyway, instead of wired to the modem/router.

sounds good.

thanks fam

Just found out that the bullshit has to be powered by USB so basically you have to have it plugged up via wire to an Xbox or PC...bullshit as marketing team made sure to keep that out and make it look like a fucking memory stick....canceling order for the pure fuckery.

Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
plug it into the usb port on your TV...:hmm:

Physical media as in throwing a dvd at it?

Just jokes but yeah, can't see why it would be difficult to do at all.

The device as an addressable network card, i'm sure it's running linux.

Maybe to keep cost down, it doesn't include ram but just a microprocessor that does simple interface conversions for now.

I ordered one so I'll see if I have the time to hack it.

Just got mine delivered by UPS.

Set up didn't work the first time using the Chromecast Android app on my downstairs TV which is pretty far from the router. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.chromecast.app

Worked seamlessly on my bedroom TV using the Chromecast site on my PC https://cast.google.com/chromecast/setup

For those worried about powering it, you can use your HDMI port (if your TV is HDMI 1.4), USB input or the power adapter to connect to the wall. I'm actually using the USB cord connected to the USB input on my cable box. I can use the Roku's USB port too.

Google Music and Youtube streaming work perfectly. Songs and video start up/change almost immediately.

Only problem I think I'll have is since it uses HDMI, I won't be able to play PS3 (video from 1 input) and listen to music (audio on a separate input) with my Onkyo receiver. I'll have to rig something up.

Buy a powerline adapter for your home if you don't have an ethernet outlet at the other TV

e.g.
Linksys PLWK400 Powerline HomePlug AV WiFi Wireless Extender Network Adapter Kit 802.11n

PLWK400_Main01.jpg

If you do have an ethernet outlet at the other TV, then get an old router, install DD-WRT you basically have a state of the art router

Been there, done that... I have MoCa adapters throughout my house (similar to powerline but more reliable because it uses the cable lines). Problem is the Chromecast device doesn't have a wired connection. I did the setup close to my router but I'm sure it'll work when I re-connect it to my downstairs TV/sound system. If not, I'll add a repeater but I haven't had issues with range with my other devices.

maybe the chromecast has a low power transceiver since it needs to be able to be powered by USB. In addition it also has an internal antenna.

Maybe you could drop the technical spec if available, not sure that they would put that on the box though.

that's a problem...

Glad i didn't go Onkyo.... on my Yamaha i can pick and choose different audio and video sources for output.

I can too on the Onkyo but only when the input is audio only. If whatever is connected via HDMI includes video, it's going to play both audio & video from that 1 HDMI source. For example, I play PS3 (HDMI) while listening to my wireless home audio system connected via digital optical. I set video to PS3 and change the audio input to digital optical.

My receiver is about 5 years old so I wasn't surprised back then it couldn't play video from 1 HDMI input and audio from a different HDMI input. Don't know which Yamaha you have but even the 2012 & 2013 Yamahas and Denons cannot do this with HDMI.

If that's the case, then the manuals are all wrong

YAMAHA
You can listen to the audio of one input source while
watching the video of another. This function takes
advantage of the fact that when an audio-only input source
(PC, TV/CD, PHONO) is selected, the video input source
remains unchanged. The following procedure shows how
to listen to a CD player’s audio source connected to
TV/CD IN while watching a Blu-ray Disc/DVD player’s
video source connected to BD/DVD.

1 Press BD/DVD.
2 Press TV/CD.
The audio output changes to the CD source, but the
video of previously-selected BD/DVD is retained.

3 Start playback on your Blu-Ray Disc/DVD and CD
players.

You can now enjoy watching your Blu-ray Disc/DVD
with the sound of your CD player.

DENON
This unit can display video from a different source on TV during audio playback.

You can set this for each input source.
Supported input sources : USB / CDz / TUNER / NETWORK
- Available when none of HDMI, component video or video connector is assigned.

Overall impression of the device after your testing?

So technically, I can be in the Chrome browser on my laptop, on xvideos.com, and with the click of a button have porn appear on the TV where I have the ChromeCast plugged into...

:devil::lol::roflmao3::roflmao2::itsawrap::blush: :clap: :cheers:

CNET has a review of it where they tested it from a nexus 7, and also to display video from a Chrome browser on a laptop.

They better fucking keep that Netflix offer. :hmm::angry:

Send local media (music, videos, etc on your hard drive) to Chromecast

While Chromecast is designed to let you stream content from the internet to your TV, as mentioned above it can actually send anything from a browser tab to your TV.

So here’s a neat trick: Open up the Chrome web browser on your computer and type c:/ into the address bar. You should see a list of files and directories on your computer’s C drive.

Navigate to a video file and you can play it through your Chrome browser — and if you can do that, you can also send it to your TV.

Go up and check at the store. It said the same thing for me but I went up up to one store and they just sold them out. So they did an inventory check for me, they found another location nearby with stock and he rung it up there and I went to the other store to pick it up:dance:

Just got it hooked up, shit is cool. I got Roku's, ps3, and an xbox360, but my inner geek couldn't not let me try it out esp for $35. May make some nice presents for Christmas for the fam.
