You ever spend a grip on an external HD, fill that shit up with movies and plug that shit into your PS3 or XBOX 360, only to have that shit look back at you like you didn't connect shit?

You check the connection, but the connection is fine. SO, what gives?

The hard drive you just shelled out money for is NTFS, or some other format incompatible to game systems. It works for other shit. It works with your computer, but not for game systems. Now you are stuck...

But no longer

Now, I'm no techie, NTFS is great for transferring files larger than 4GB, but I don't know what other benefits it has. Either way, you can format any HD to FAT32 and it works in seconds.

Bump. I know I ain't the only one with this problem. I just got an HD I got specifically for movies, only to find out that my PS3 didn't read the sonofabitch. The conversion takes less than a minute, and it is a small program.

is there anyway to put downloaded games on the hard drive and play them on the 360? Probably not more wish full thinking on my part :cool:

Why are you using a 3rd party software for this?

Just choose your format using the options within the format tools of the OS. Right click on the USB, Portable HD, etc... and choose which format option. Done.

I was thinking the same thing but on another note what is the os you're running I know its not a stock version of 7 it looks interesting.

On my HD, and probably many others there was only NTFS and exFAT available. It doesn't matter what was used, what matters is that it works.

But the PS3 in my bedroom still connect to my HD.

Because you can't format a partition larger than 32GB FAT32 in Windows XP/Vista/7 using Disk Management (only allows exFat and NTFS) or the Format Tool in Windows Explorer (only allows NTFS). You can get around it via the command line or use 3rd party apps. It was hardcoded by MS to promote NTFS.

Once you go past 32gb the cluster size of fat32 is 32kb, so you'll end up wasting a lot of space if you store small files on it. You should only use it for large files, but another limitation of fat32 is that files can't be bigger than 4gb. Using a drive formatted like this except for specific circumstances is inefficient and would probably result in user complaints that their 1tb drive is only holding 700gb of data if they left it easy for people who don't know any better.

So basically, fat32 formatting is better on smaller drives 32gbs and below, because anything larger than that, available storage space would be lost?

Fuck the additional space, by that time you would be working on buying a new hard drive anyway. In the end, it is a drive you can connect to your PS3 or 360 vs. one you cannot.

but i don't want to turn 500gb into 300 doing so

did you notice much of a significant loss of storage

No, on a 500 you may lose 30 (it may not even be that much), which is less than 10%, shit, if you are down to your last 30 gigs on a 500, then as I said you are buying another new hard drive anyway.

It could be a lot more than that, or less than that. It depends on how the data matches up to the drive cluster size. It dosn't matter if it a 32k or a 1k file, it's going to take up 32k of space, or whatever the cluster size is.

You can always partition a big drive into smaller fat 32 drives if you are that concerned about loosing hard drive space on one large drive.

although I could have sworn that a 2 terabyte I hooked up to for a quick back up was seen as a 1.8 terabyte fat32 drive. I needed the drive for something else, so I didn't have time to confirm it.

I did loose about 100 gigs on the 650 drive I put into my PS3, which caught me off guard.

I did mine when it was new, so it would be best to do it with a new one OR transfer your data to another HD before you do it just in case.

I just checked it and the total available is 931 on a terabyte hard drive, so 69GB was lost. Like I said before, with TB costing 100 or less, now, by that time just get another HD.

This also works on an External Hard Drive that you could use to connect through your car stereo's USB input. I have a hard drive full of shit in my whip so I don't have to keep connecting and disconnecting my phone.
