New York?

I'm looking to take a trip to NY next month, but I'm not really sure where to go. I'll just post a few questions and if you don't mind, help me from there.

I don't have a particular reason to go, just going because I've always wanted too.

1. What's the best airport to fly into?

2. What city has more to offer meaning should I go to NYC or Manhattan, etc?

3. Is a rental car necessary? What hotels should I avoid?

4. What's the weather like during mid-Oct?

5. Whats there to site see, where to go shopping?

6. Are we safe at night walking?

I'm not trying to offend anyone, but it will either be me alone or me and my daughter, and I'm trying to get a gist of what to expect.

I'm looking to purchase my airline tickets in the next few days, but I really need some pointers.

1. JFK is easier to access via public transportation, but cabs run from all area airports in the city (LaGuardia, JFK, Newark)...i never flew outta Newark though

2. Manhattan is a part of NYC, this is where most of the touristy spots are (Empire State, Central Park, Guggenheim, The Garden, the first Macy's store (if that's your thing)

3. Any hotel in the city is gonna charge an arm and a leg.if you're staying in the other boroughs (Queens, Bronx, Brooklyn..oh and Staten Island) you probably would need a car, but if you're staying in manhattan, take the train (or good luck w/ a cab).

4. Mid October can be warm..usually chilly...50-65 degrees... defnitely need a jacket...won't need a bubble coat or anything

5. Sight seeing...off the top of my head...

Manhattan - Wall Street, Ground Zero, Statue of Liberty, (Ferry from South street?), South Street Seaport, High Line Park (a Park built from elevated train tracks, Empire State building..Chrysler building (do they do tours?) Apollo Theatre, the museums (MOMA - Museum of Modern Art; Guggenheim, Museum of National History, Schomberg Af-Am Library; African Burial Ground Museum) Central Park

Bronx - Bronx Zoo..Yankees game (should be in the playoffs, so tickets might be pricey...

Brooklyn - Brooklyn Museum...(i woulda said Eastern Parkway, but that's Labor Day)..small shops in downtown Brooklyn...

Queens - Shea Stadium, Musuem of National History, Jamaica Ave (shopping area)

Staten Island - you might run into a member of Wu-Tang

Big Shopping spots would be the Jamaica Ave in Queens, Canal St Area in Lower Manhattan...lots of stores (pricey and cheap) in Manhattan, just depends on what you're looking for.

6. honestly this depends, i don't think you'll get a real accurate answer, here...because most of BGOL are dudes. NYC is a big ass city, and i have read/heard many stories about street harassment here. I can't speak on it, because i don't see it (not around to see it) but if you stay in brightly lit areas at night, you should be good (its one thing to be in Times Square on a Thursday night, as opposed to 125th and Lenox in Harlem on a Thursday night. Best bet is to ask a female friend/relative about walking around here

Depending on how many days you plan on staying, i would suggest getting a weekly metro card it will make traveling more efficient. Renting a car is cool, but it will take away from the experience, and parking may become a hassle. also, if you come in from the JFK Airport you can take the air train from the airport to the subway, and be in Manhattan in 45 mins.

Manhattan has the most to offer probably the safest as well. check out Soho (south of houston street), Herald Square 34th st , or maybe 125th st Harem for shopping. Hit up 42nd st Times square for the bright lights food , comedy, pictures , etc. Don't bother going to Queens, or the Bronx, and defiantly not Staten Island. They have very little to offer unless you wanna hit up a lounge, or shopping in a urban environment.

Weather is tricky around this time of year so bring a jacket, roll your sleeves up if it get warm and u'll be good.

Overall New York City is pretty safe, as long as you exercise good judgment, and stay away from the homeless you should be fine. I wouldn't advise taking the train after midnight tho they run alot less frequently and can get dangerous.

Lastly, Bring Lots And Lots Of Money!!!!

Food alone is expensive, and you'll be getting nickeled and dime'd most of your time here . so make sure your pockets are fatt, and take pictures.

Good Luck

If you decide to just do site seeing you should hit up the museums and catch a game as well. Definitely get a zagat guide. If you want to experience the art culture of Ny when you get here grab a Village Voice paper and see what concerts or art exhibits are in town. If your staying in Manhattan and plan to just do the majority of tourist stuff get the weeklong metrocard. If you want to go and see the outerbouroughs rent a car since the parking isn't as bad outside of Manhattan.

Manhattan is full of stuff to buy so just bring a lot of money and you'll find unique stuff.

There are some decent hotels in NY but compare prices and understand that some of the boutique hotels tend to over charge because they think it makes them classy. There is a decent Holiday Inn on Parkslope, Brooklyn and truthfully I can't think of an overall safer neighborhood in all of New York and its a few train stops from the Atlantic street train hub that connects to the rest of the city if you decide to not rent a car.

Is New York safe at night? Well like someone said we're a bunch of black guys on here so NY is pretty safe for us unless we do something stupid or get randomly killed by the police. but all in all NY is one of the safest cities in America. I mean hell white people live in the hood these days.

I'm sure you're going to have a good time once you come to NYC. Check out BB Kings to see who will be performing the week you're here and make plans for at least one night of dining in the East Village. Also hit up a comedy club or two for some laughs. Most of all, have fun! Enjoy!

if you want to be a tourist, stay in manhattan. hit up the usual venues. if you want to be an explorer and see what it really is, this is where you go.

city island, bronx: nothing but seafood restaurants.
yankee stadium, bronx: the greatest baseball team ever
fulton mall, brooklyn: this is how the working class man in nyc shops
u must walk on 125th street in harlem
bed-stuy: some of the best architecture in the city (brownstones
), specifically the stuyvesant heights section
williamsburg, brooklyn: funky vibe, nice bars and restaurants (L train to bedford avenue)
the rockaways, queens: as close to nature as you will get in nyc, about 6 miles of beach
do a round trip on the staten island ferry and get some great views of the statue of liberty, its free
walk across the brooklyn bridge

those are a few suggestions....when i go to different places i dont want to be a tourist i want to get the real deal, feel me?

After all this time, I'm headed to N.Y.. Flights are booked, hotel will be by Friday. Besides what's listed above, what food places do you still recommend? We we're going to do an AirBnB but not sure what areas are safe since we're not renting a car.

How much above is still relevant?

What I love about NYC is that, if you're up for it, you can try so many different types of food spots and types of food and have a great meal.

Looking at the above mentioned, it still is relevant.

Red Rooster in Harlem is supposed to be nice, but I've never been.

If the weather is nice, just walk around midtown, Harlem, etc. and choose a place - you probably will land in a good spot, to be honest.

You don't need a car there - as long as you're close to a train station, you're good. Between Uber, cabs and the subway, you can get any and everywhere.

Depending on weather, walk around Central Park - just walking around the city is something I miss from when I lived there.

I never been to NYC. I'm planning on going to the Intrepid Museum this summer.

There are so many great museums in NYC. I used to love doing the Museum Mile festival where you could pop in and out of all the museums, including the Guggenheim. The only thing is the building was more exciting than the exhibits inside lol.

AirBnBs and other short-term rentals are almost always ILLEGAL in NYC. A lot of them are straight up scams.

I'm headed to NYC in a couple of weeks. I go almost every year now.
Is this your first visit? How many days are you staying? What are you wanting to see?
Most people stay in Midtown for their first visit.

Co-sign on the air bnb thing.

Last time I went to NYC I stayed at the Z in Queens. Tiny room for $100/night but the sheets were clean and it's not like I spent much time indoors anyway. Only 20 minutes from Times Square (10 walking, 10 riding) in a relatively safe neighborhood.

My companions on the other hand spent more per night to get a slightly bigger Air BnB in Chelsea. Spent half the day scratching themselves everywhere we went.

Air BnB works in some places. Got a REALLY nice one in New Orleans last month, but I wouldn't trust it in NYC

I would seriously reconsider doing an AirBnB. Too high a risk of it being a scam.
Depending on what your budget is per night, you can find a decent place for about the same price.
There's no central location to take in all the tourist spots (Statue of Liberty, Empire State building, 9/11 memorial and museum, etc.), but again, most first-time visitors stay in Midtown because of Times Square and Broadway.
Get an unlimited subway pass for $32 or so and you can ride around on the train as much as you want to get around everywhere.

Times Square is good for a one-time visit at night to see all the lights, but I wouldn't spend a whole lot of time there.
It's very touristy with crappy overpriced food and shady people trying to hustle you into taking a picture and other nonsense.

How was the trip, Coco?
The trip was wonderful!!! I was/am sooo tired but I enjoyed every minute of it. One of my friends that went wanted to stay in the room and we left her in there too.

Only place I didn't get to go was Central Park and Empire State Building. I plan to go back during the summer hopefully.
