Queensbridge to Shaolin: The Mobb Deep-Nas-Raekwon Connection
ON FEBRUARY 9, 2016 BY CHRISTOPHER PIERZNIKIN HIP-HOP, NOSTALGIA

“In the jungle, banging Nas, Mobb Deep, and Wu”
Since 1995, there has been a connection between Nas, Mobb Deep, and Raekwon.

Nas, Prodigy, and Havoc hailed from Queensbridge while Raekwon, a charter member of the Wu-Tang Clan, represented Shaolin (a/k/a Staten Island), but he was signed as a solo artist to Loud Records, the same label as the Mobb. There were overlaps and they supported each other often, especially in 1995 and 1996, but have linked up in more recent years too.

As Rae himself said later about their first collaboration, “I happen to have a good relationship with these guys, Mobb Deep. At that time, there was a Queens and Shaolin thing going on. Nas was my good friend as well, and we was chilling one night.”

The four even appeared together on an episode of Yo! MTV Raps:

But, like so often happens in hip-hop, there were some cracks in the friendships.

On “Destroy & Rebuild” off 2001’s Stillmatic, Nas went on the offensive, attacking several people including Prodigy:

Before I woulda told you Prodigy’s my dog/Through the ups and downs, robberies and all/Though I always knew he wanted my downfall/He would say his little slick shit and act real funny/For what, n—a, you’re butt and it got back to me/Askin’ a Braveheart to get back your jewelry/You ain’t from my hood, don’t even rep Q.B.

Prodigy explained how he believes the rift began.

The two have reconciled since then and have even recorded together multiple times.

The following year, off God’s Son, on the track “Last Real N—a Alive,” Nas discussed his friendship with both Raekwon and The Notorious B.I.G., although those two were not friendly.

Big was ahead of his time, him and Raekwon my n—s/But dig it, they couldn’t get along/That’s when Ghostface said it on the Purple Tape/Bad Boy biting Nas album cover, wait!/Big told me Rae was stealing my slang/And Rae told me out in Shaolin, Big would do the same thing/But I borrowed from both them n—s

While they don’t run together as often as they did in the ’90s, they’ve still added to their collaborative discography in recent years. Nas, Rae, Havoc, and Prodigy have rocked together on many occasions in different combinations. Here are a few (but certainly not all of them):

“Eye For a Eye (Your Beef Is Mines)” – Mobb Deep f/Nas & Raekwon (1995)

“Right Back At You” – Mobb Deep f/Raekwon, Ghostface Killah & Big Noyd (1995)

“Eye For a Eye (Your Beef Is Mines)” [Original] – Mobb Deep f/Nas, Raekwon & Ghostface Killah (1995)

“Verbal Intercourse” – Raekwon f/Ghostface Killah & Nas (1995)

“Live N—a Rap” – Nas f/Mobb Deep (1996)

“Give It Up Fast” – Mobb Deep f/Nas & Big Noyd (1996)

“Nighttime Vultures” – Mobb Deep f/Raekwon (1996)

“John Blaze” – Fat Joe f/Nas, Raekwon, Big Punisher & Jadakiss (1998)

“It’s Mine” – Mobb Deep f/Nas (1999)

“Self-Conscious” – Prodigy & Nas (2000)

“Street Life” – Mobb Deep f/Nas

“Tick Tock” – Alchemist f/Nas & Prodigy (2004)

“Rich & Black” – Raekwon f/Nas (2011)

“Dog Shit” – Mobb Deep f/Nas (2011)

“Get It Forever” – Mobb Deep f/Nas (2011)

QUEENSBRIDGE — The mural for late Mobb Deep rapper Prodigy that wasvandalized twice before being painted over earlier this week will be replaced by a "community-inspired" piece of art that won't include a tribute to the hip-hop legend, according to the nonprofit that operates the building.

Urban Upbound, which runs antipoverty services at its headquarters on 13th Street and 40th Avenue, allowed artists to paint the portrait of Prodigy on the side of its building to honor the musician, who died last month at the age of 42.

But the mural was defaced twice just days after its completion — first covered in white paint, then splattered with red paint after artists spent hours restoring it following the first incident. The wall has since been painted over in solid black.

"We took a leap and gave these artists permission to paint the mural on there as a tribute, not thinking that it would be a problem," said Urban Upbound founder Bishop Mitchell Taylor. "Unfortunately there were some people that were hating."

The group is now raising funds to create a new mural at the site, but to avoid future vandalism, it will not be a replacement of the Prodigy portrait, according to Taylor.

"Why should I keep putting an image up to give a person an opportunity to disrespect [it]?" he said.

Taylor added that he has "great respect" for Prodigy and fellow Mobb Deep rapper Havoc, noting the duo performed for free at past Urban Upbound fundraisers.

The group will look for other ways to honor the late artist, but plans to replace the mural with something "that nobody would dare deface."

"We'll get the kids involved and put a nice mural up that everyone in the community can be proud of," Taylor explained.

The nonprofit launched an online campaign this week to raise $20,000, which Taylor says would cover the cost of a new mural, including paying an artist to paint it, as well as fixing parts of the building also damaged by the vandals.

"We got paint all over the awning, so the awning has to be replaced. There's paint all over the sidewalk," he said.

Within the span of 48 hours, the mural that artists Jeff Henriquez and Eli Lazare created in honor of Prodigy has been created, defaced, cleaned and vandalized again.

Instagram user, Raphael Gonzalez, posted a picture Monday morning (July 10) of Prodigy’s mural splattered with paint for a second time.

The mural can be found across the street from Queensbridge Houses in NYC, scaled on the wall of the Urban Upbound building on 13th Street and 40th Avenue. When the honorary art was first discovered, hip-hop fans rejoiced, sharing pictures across social media. Just hours later, it was ruined with white paint splattered across the portrait of the late MC.

On Sunday (July 9), Henriquez and Lazare were found repainting and restoring their masterpiece without the knowledge that it would be disrespected again—this time, with red paint.

The artists shared a combined statement with DNAinfo upon the initial reveal of the Mobb Deep rapper’s mural: “His deep and meaningful lyrics inspired and influenced many young rappers and followers.”

[Intro: Roc Raida & Prodigy]
"Wake you up and as I stare in your face you seem stunned..." --> Rakim
(repeat 2X)
"Wake you up and as I stare in your..." (repeat 2X)
"I wake you up and as I stare in your face you seem stunned"
[Prodigy] Remember P, the one you got your whole style from?
"I wake you up and as I stare in your face you seem stunned"
[Prodigy] Remember me, the one you got your rhyme style from?
"I wake you up and as I stare in your face you seem stunned"
[Prodigy] Remember P, the one you got your rhyme style from?
"Yo it's the P" *cut and scratched*

[Verse 1: Prodigy]
Yo, disperse from off this, who the culprits
That claim to be the newest, rappin bullshit
My rhymes, get Ruger endorsements, my song boost
Intertec sales through the ceiling, let's talk with guns
Convo til the po-lice come
Give you a red shirt with the wet hat to match
First max like it's Hamburger Hill for real
It's Red Dawn when the Mobb get it on, my outfit
Stuck on some wild out shit, all about it
We move gambit, through the overcrowded
Forthwith, pull out long fifths, extended clips
Point the nozzle and shift your back disc
Me and the clique-a, sit down and eat dinner
Wake up every mornin write a new banger
That strike harder than your best attempt to sound like P
Or the H-A-V-O-C, nigga

"I wake you up and as I stare in your face you seem stunned"
[Rebel INS] Remember me, the one you got the technique from?
"I wake you up and as I stare in your face you seem stunned"
[Rebel INS] Remember me, the one you got your freestyle from?
"I wake you up and as I stare in your face you seem stunned"
[Rebel INS] Remember Deck, I told y'all, Protect Ya Neck

"I'm Rebel INS your highness" *cut and scratched*

[Verse 2: Inspectah Deck]
Fake one, take one, no ultimatum face one
There's no escape from straight from the grain come the great one
My blade swung, decapitate your snake head
Slit your snake tongue make one false maneuver you a mystery
Unsolved, the mob that revolves automatically involved
Musclebound sounds surround commercial thugs
Rock turtledove bowery suits
And purple gloves, me and you can have some fun
Make it a blast, you couldn't take the impact
With steel shoulderpads, blood for blood
Veteran, covered in mud, wounded in the midst of war
Still tradin slugs gettin major love
Way above you newcomers, I come thunderin
With the heat of two summers when I enter the zone
Move mountains with the presence alone before the words
Rip through the microphone, chrome dipped lyrics
Are known to split stone, you private eyes home in
But can't seem to clone

"I wake you up and as I stare in your face you seem stunned"
[Big Pun] Remember Pun, the one you bit your whole shit from?
"I wake you up and as I stare in your face you seem stunned"
[Big Pun] Remember Pun, I snatched away the moon and blew away the sun
"I wake you up and as I stare in your face you seem stunned"
[Big Pun] Remember Pun, the one with over a thousand guns

"You start to suffer" *cut and scratched*

[Verse 3: Big Pun]
Yo, Big Punisher's ready
Prodigy, Deck and me, QB ("Shaolin") and Bronx trilogy
Lyrically hazardous for your wealth, swing on your world's piece
Foil your plans, boil your grams, take a shine
Fold all your hands, spoil your mans, make him mine
Take all you made, call you gay on Hot 97
Drop by your dwellin got the nueve right behind your melon
Ain't no tellin when the bullet's behind the trigger
I do it to live niggas and Pulitzer Prize winners
You wouldn't survive nigga, if I chose you
Froze you from ear to ear, showin your whole vocal
Who told you, you could roll through, my lyrics practically rose you
From the grave, like The Crow's do (*next lyrics overlap Scarface sample*)
I told you a long time ago, don't ever fuck me
Cause if I leave you half dead ("Oahh-kay!" - T.M.) consider yourself
("You wanna play rough? - T.M.) very lucky, very ugly from the face up
Leave you laced up, Joey Crillz, Pros, Cuban Link, Triple Seis, WHAT?

[Scratches: Roc Raida]
"Soon you start to suffer"
"The RZA"
"The Inspectah Deck"
"Yo it's the P"
"The Punisher's ready"
