First let me say I'm glad to see this thread up and going..!
My question is about grass seed, and when is the best time to plant it..?

I'm up here in NY, so right now the weather is up and down, one minute its cold and windy, the next its a nice 50 - 60 degrees w/ some rain..! Should I plant the seeds now before the hart of winter sets in, so the seeds will have a chance to germinate under the snow; so in the spring they can start to sprout..? Or Should I just wait till the end of winter/ begging of spring...?
Thanks in Advance..!!!

From my experience the best time to seed is the fall(sept to mid oct.) Anything after oct. would run the risk of not germinating because of leaves, drop in temp. and frost. Second best time is early spring(early march) but no later than mid april.

^^^yup what he said. and that goes for pretty much every north american zone. check your seed choices directions and recommendations too, they'll help. like for me in arkansas, its pretty much warm year round. it gets cold but rarely freezing cold and if it does freeze its short-term, so i like to sprinkle zoysiagrass really early in the spring.

like others have said fall or spring
im gonna drop a grass/lawncare megapost when I get time - within the next week

its too late to put grass in now unless you're in the extreme south or south west - frost will kill your lawn before it has a chance to get setup

If you want to feed the birds go ahead and plant.

I wen to the SCOTTS website and followed the wizard they have there and that worked wonders for my lawn.

They take into consideration

ZONES
GRASS TYPE
INSECTS
FUNGUS

This works for grass anywhere in the US.

Good luck

Depends on what type of grass you want to plant.

Kentucky Tall Fescue is cool season grass and hates the heat whereas Bermuda loves the heat. Zoysia can eat a hole clean though a bank account but it's pretty as hell once established.

When I lived in VA (Richmond) this cat I worked with gave me this formula for keeping my grass thick and green. Get yourself a bottle attachment for your hose.

Now in a pouring container mix the following:

1 cup ammonia
1 cup liquid dish soap
1 can of Beer
1 pinch of smokeless tobacco

pour all into bottle and attach to hose. Spray lawn until the contents run clear.

So how does it work?

Ammonia has double action...acts as fertilizer and also blends with yeast in beer to provide food for your lawn.

Dish soap keeps bugs, worms and grubs off your lawn. Turns out they don't like soap like.

Smokeless tobacco provides root strengthening components.

now that is strange when i use to work for my uncle when i was a
teen he told me about the ammonia, tobacco and dish washing liquid but the beer is new to me

good info

what about those pesky weeds though??

yo
weird question
EXACTLY what are you buying to put down in the soil? i have some patches i need to fill but thinking about redoing the entire backyard with something fresh that will be nice thick and green. what should i buy?

Makkonnen
07-02-2009, 01:52 AM
what you put down depends on why you have patches
could be mold, dogs pissin, grubs - all kinds of shit different resolutions for each problem
it also doesn't make sense to put seed or sod down until you resolve it

for your backyard

your choice for your yard depends on your zone(where you live in the US) and the type of soil you have - check the link below - a good formula for selecting the right grass is

1. soil survey - your local extension office will have sample bags you can pick up, fill them with soil from your yard, pay a few bucks and they will analyze it and send you a report with the composition and ph of your yard.
(the extension office is run by your local university)

2. Based on your soil results and your zone you can select a grass that is to your liking

3. Hire someone to install sod or plan to plant in fall or spring
4. Kill off any weeds or undesired turf already in place
5. Fertilize to bring your ph balance in the soil to the level your grass requires
6. Plant seed or put down sod

http://www.american-lawns.com/grasses/grasses.html

I need to kill my lawn and reseed but I dont want to wait so I gotta look at sod. I need a new survey to make sure I dont fuck with my neighbors' lawns. Rainfall has been hella good so my normally shitty lawn looks great but I want something nicer.

I live in the south so my zone may not be the same as yours. While some of the sites listed are addressing turf stuff for NC and SC they still are great sources of information. That turffiles site is basically a resource for groundskeepers and other lawncare pros.

Thanks for all the info. I just bought a house in NC and the yard is mostly dendelions and dirt. The soil looks to be mostly sand or clay. I am in the process of getting a soil test done now to determine the correct course of action.

I swear dealing with these dandelions is a bitch. They make up about 40% of the yard.

Makkonnen

man dandelions aint no joke when they get big - fuckin things put spines right through my gloves

wait til it rains and the come right up

get some roundup from lowes and a sprayer and kill that shit off
