Lifting is for everybody.

Theres a dude named Craig at my gym who for the longest time I thought he was in his late 30's early 40's, and one day I'm talking to this cat who's around my age (I'm 34) and he tells me how his dad is getting him into shape, I was like "word?!? ..your dad??" he says "yeah, Craig's my dad".

Craig is 69 years old, he didn't start lifting till into his 40's.

He had some medical problem a long time ago and Dr's told him he had to get into shape and he went all the way with it, 6 pack, veins in his calves the whole nine. He works out HARD with his "friend" (a 20 something year old Spanish chick) ..That dude is my hero!.

So yeah, lifting can help, as far as workouts go I would suggest you ease on in or find a PT (personal trainer) or "Friend"

I'm 45 and i started lifting seriously about 5 years ago. YES you can still build muscle after 40! As a matter of fact you should be lifting weights or doing some form of resistance training or you will in fact lose muscle as you age.

It's funny when I work out with younger guys and I'm telling them to put weights on the bar when working my sets into theirs. My wife has been happy with the results as well. :D

yeah man, start out small doing high reps, low weight. concentrate on your core like your stomach and legs. those are where you see the most problems. strong legs burn more fat and calories than anything. learn where you smaller joints and tendons are so you don't do like i did when i was young trying to benchpress a house and now i have shoulder problems and shit.
even yoga and pilates work well for gettin lean and fit.
